What are some good ways to help clear my lungs after I quit smoking?!

Question: I've been smoking for a good 10 years now... off and on, but mostly on. I'm wanting to start exercising and getting into better health, but I know that if I am to really start breathing hard (while exercising) my lungs are gonna feel TERRIBLE! (I've done it before and just coughed and coughed till I threw up - hurting my lungs and my throat).

Besides just coughing all that crud out when I do start exercising, is there something that could help loosen it?

I know it's gonna be hard to get back into shape... but I'm so sick of how I feel now...

Any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated... mostly from people who have done it before.

Thank you!

Prior answer was correct "just don't smoke and they will clear themeselves out".

But that's not all. you need to be hydrated (healthily).

Throwing up, caughing, all that is paiful, yes, but not deadly.

Smoking is deadly. Congratz on quitting. You should be proud!

And comitting to it! Go you!

:)

But if you are uncomfortable, there are things you can take to make yourself feel better (in the short term). Halls, the cough drop helps. Anything soothing to the throat. Ice Creame.

Stay away from pizza, acid things like soda and fatty foods.

All this will help.

And if you can stand it, some herbal teas will help you feel better too. As long as you dont' over caffeinate. Minty ones might also help your throat feeling better.

Good luck to you and stay strong! Keep us up to date and lets us know how it goes!

(PS : when my parents quit smoking after 20 years, my mom took up gardening, and my dad golf. being outside for LONG periods of time helped a lot. When they were inside, they tended to snack often. Hard candies, cookies, etc. This was their way of coping with not having that "thing" to do when they were watching tv or whatever. Now they are off the candies and sweets, but the outdoor stuff is still there,a nd they feel much better for it. Maybe you can try this too!)

just dont smoke and they will clear themselves out lol

They are going to clear themselves out. I have quit 4 times over the last 15 years, aren't I a dummy?

But I did not try this at the time, but I have done this with a cold and realized it would work when quiting...use mucinex for a week before you start excercising, between quiting and that, you should be good.

But no matter what U do, the excercise is gonna be tough at first. You just have to give your lungs time to retrain themselves. take it slow at first.

GOOD LUCK

After 25 years of smoking pretty heavily, I quit, 5 years ago. I had a smoker's cough and it continued for quite some time, but I did not cough up anything. Glad I didn't, but not sure why I didn't!! Of course, at the same time that I quit, I had lung surgery and took out 1/3 of my left lung. They thought I had cancer, then tuberculosis, then found out it was just a fungus!! My lungs haven't been the same since, but I am still able to do a lot of the things I did before.

Did you ever try doing a body cleanse? I have always considered doing a cleanse because I think we are all toxic from so many things in our environments, but many of them were too complicated and I did not think I would be able to stick to it. I finally found one I thought I could do and I am SO HAPPY! I lost 10 pounds in a week and 28 pounds in a month. I feel so much better.
