okay i am a dance too and can do do the splits every way and have better turn out than anyone i know
go up next to a wall and sit with your feet sticking strait up then let your legs fall so you are in the splits position. sit for a while.
lay next to a wall like this __( (=wall __ = u, spread feet out into splitz position and push against wall

as for feet. turn out just have somoene point your feet for you and keep feet and legs turned out.

Yoga is a good alternative.

When I was studying ballet and ballet-jazz I was also doing karate. Some karate schools have some pretty creative ways to stretch.

Gymnastics too.

If you could get a hold of a Butho dance teacher (a technique developed in Japan, that mixes modern dance with shiatsu), you will have found the answer !!!!! Butho stretches are done two by two. After a week-end workshop in Butho I did the front split, my belly touched the floor in front of me for the first time in my life. Pretty amazing.
