Can fruits, vegetables be fattening? i am confused!?!

Question: recently ive decided to eat a lot healthier, and gradually hopefully lose a few pounds, i have been making sure i eat 5 portions of fruit/veg a day but noticing how high they are in carbs is this really good? i would never cut fruits out because i love them to much, but could they be fattening?

my typical diet consisits of porridge in the morning, grilled chicken, salad style lunch and a failry light dinner, with fruit and veg snacks inbetween throughout the day

I mean white bread is supposed to be bad, but it has less sugars than fruits? so..im confused?!! any info would be really appreciated!

thanks in advance!

Fruits & vegetables are great for you, but anything eaten in excess can be fattening. It sounds like you eat a pretty healthy diet though. Fruits & vegetables are both great to eat during meals and in between meal snacks.

You are right that white bread is a bad choice. You should eat a whole grain bread, as it has more natural vitamins and fiber. It's in a different dietary category than fruit, so you really can't compare the two.

And yes, fruit does have sugar and some are high in carbs, but theres a catch. Fruit contains a natural sugar called fructose, which is different from table sugar or sugar added to products which is a form of glucose. Fructose takes longer to break down in the body, which means it doesn't get stored as excess calories (fat) as quickly as glucose.

Also, if you are counting carbs, keep in mind that all carbs are sugar. Once ingested, the body breaks all carbohydrates down into glucose. So something may be "low" in sugar on the label (for example, bread) but really all the grams of carbs are sugars. You need 200-300 grams of carbs a day based on your age, weight and caloric requirements, but any excess over that your body will quickly turn to body fat.

A great site to see what you need nutritionally is www.mypyramid.gov. Hope that helps!

grapes-not good, the rest-good

fruits and veggies are def. not fattening.
the sugar in bread and the sugar in fruit are different kinds of sugar.

keep eating fruits and veges.

yes they do have a small percentage. everything consists of carbs. except water

be careful no to eat grapes.

uve got a good diet.

You can follow General Motors diet for a week.Following is the link

certain fruits and veggies such as grapes or corn has a higher sugar content but it is a different kind of sugar that isnt as bad as raw sugar but moderation honey is the key. Do not overeat on anything. It sounds like you doing well on your menu choices keep up the good work!

I think that fruits have alot of fruit sugar and stuff but since its healthy i think its easier to burn compared to white bread. :) But i think if you eat like a lot of fruits it could be fattening too. So just make sure to eat a good amount of fruits and vegetables.

Anything can be fattening if you eat enough of it. Diets don't work and never did. Develop your own food plan and stay with it. It is the only thing that will work in the long haul

The sugars and carbs in fruits and vegetables are all natural and perfectly fine to eat.

However, I will not eat white bread or feed it to my daughter unless one or both of us is/are starving to death, literally. The good stuff from the wheat was stripped and then bleached white to give the white bread the white bread and taste. The flour is then "enriched" with some of the nutrients taken out, but it doesn't come close to the nutrition and, in my opinion, taste of whole grain bread. Also, regardless of whether or not it's white or whole grain, it might have been sweetened with corn syrup and/or high fructose corn syrup, artificical sweeteners. If a product contains enriched flour (evne if whole grain is the first ingredient), and/or corn syrup, and/or high fructose corn syrup I don't buy it or eat it.

However, if I had to, I would eat whole grain bread with the bad ingredients. I just don't make a practice of it. My in-laws do occasionaly buy whole wheat bread, but they don't read lables the way I do. (Which is why I think they have a host of health problems.) Therefore, most of their food contains the bad ingredients. Yet, if I don't have any of my bread with me, I'll resort to eating some of their whole wheat bread. My sister-in-law bought some whole wheat tortillas that she did not like and passed them on to me. One of them has corn syrup in it. I will not buy the brand in the future, but for now, since they were free, one every other day is not bad and I still count it as one of my whole grain servings (of which I have at least five a day). As it is, I do take my own foods to my in-laws since I'm picky and they're not. Since my SIL has become vegetarian, she shares her veggie "meats" with me, but I still bring my own bread because there is a distinct taste difference.

All of the carbs in things like white bread are also not good and unhealthy, as they are processed and artificial.

I live on fruits and vegetables, whole wheat bread and tortillas and pitas and crackers and brown rice, and pasta, and of course things like beans for my proteins as well.

I never got the Atkins and South Beach diets and any diet that restricts or even eliminates fruits and vegetables. However, I don't get dieting to begin with. It just sounds too boring and self-abusive.
