Dear luvlieki:

I remember when I was 12. It is an age of exploration. Exploration of EVERYTHING! Then there is peer-pressure, the need to "fit in", pressures from parents, body changes.

Now I am almost ancient - nearing 60!

Here is my advice:

Try to place less emphasis on your weight PRIOR to swim season. When the season begins do a few more laps each day than is required. Swimming will cause the few extra pounds you have to DRIP off!

Secondly, learn to love yourself. At 5'3" 110 lbs., you have nothing to be ashamed of. Devote your energy to excelling in your swim program. Be the best on the team that you can be. And, if it is only coming in second or third, well, there is always next year.

Please don't waste your "thought" energy on your personal 10 pounds. Since swim season hasn't yet started, jump rope for aerobic exercise to begin to build your tolerance. Get out and have fun - street skate, indoor roller skating. Explore the many, many other types of sports available to you.

The list goes on and on:
bicycling
gymnastics
spectator sports
learn about football and baseball rules
attend your schools' wrestling matches
tennis
table tennis
ping-pong

I think you have a good head on your shoulders to realize that dieting can be SCARRY. Thank God that you do not have to diet. Some do. You do not. So, thank Him for one problem you don't have to worrry about.

Be a leader and refuse to jump onto the weight-watch wagon. There is some evidence that constant dieting only screws up metabolism and so confuses the body that weight gain is inevitable. Take a look at your Mother to find out if you will ever have to diet. Chances are pretty good that later in life you will have her body. That's unless you're the picture of your Daddy!

I'd like to see you get an "honorable mention" at this years' sports banquet. See what you can do, kiddo, and go do it with hard work, sacrifice, determination, respect for team players and coach. You will learn many lessons in team sports....many valuable lessons.

Hug yourself for having the courage to seek answers.

Lol...and another soon to be anorexic starts on the path.

PUT DOWN THE SNICKERDOODLES

fall ill it will do wonders

don't lose weight, your already skinny enough, geez!

Just eat a blanced diet and keep active--join school sports, always a good thing. You're right, don't obsess over it, especially at your age. Just eat lots of fruits and nuts as snacks instead of chips and candy most of the time(not saying that you shouldn't have your favourite candy or chips but just substitute them for fruits and stuff every so often). Everything in moderation and you'll be good.

you are to young to diet best thing you could do is be active and not worry about looking good at the poll this summer for stupid boys

Yes you can. There are many ways to lose weight without crash diets. It's called working out. If you get all the nutrients and vitamins you need ( fruits and veggies) and do daily calorie buring activities, then the pounds will melt away. If you do serious cardio then u should only work out 3 to 4 days a week. If you are doing easy workouts u should work out 5 to 6 days a week. Not eating food is not going to magically make you lose weight. You need to have a balanced diet and a workout routine. Good Luck! : )

First off, I'm going to preface this by saying, being 5'3" and 110 pounds is a fairly normal weight for that height and being under 100 pounds would be considered underweight (this varies depending on age, but it's so hard to tell where a 12 year old is at nowadays).

The best way to lose weight without going on a diet is a. to eat healthy - allow yourself to have snacks, etc... but go for something like grapes instead of potato chips, don't eat fast food - period - yeah, you can every now and then, but it's a tough addiction and most people don't order right, so just don't even tempt yourself. Don't take seconds at meals, but definitely don't skip meals either. Don't drink soda, drink water - it's a lot of empty calories with NO nutrition - juice can have a lot of sugar in it as well.

EXERCISE is key, some things I love to do as exercise is running (especially nice if you have an mp3 player or something), I LOVE to go rock climbing - but at 12 I don't think many gyms would allow you to go without parental consent, another good exercise is playing on this thing I call the wave board - works great for the legs and abdominal region.

Please, don't become obsessed with your body at such a young age though - these things can be dangerous, just make sure you go about everything in a healthy way - don't starve yourself, don't over exert yourself, etc...

you can start lifting light weights to burn off the extra fat
