Exercising while ill?!


Question: Hi there, I have a question about exercising while ill. Normally, I run three times a week, do a martial art twice and go to the gym once. I haven't done any exercise this week as I have had a small cold affecting my sinuses and my throat. I still have a stuffy nose and wee headache but I want to get straight back into my program tomorrow.

Doctors always say 'don't exercise while you're ill blah blah' but is it really that bad to do some exercise while feeling a little under the weather? Some of my friends told me it can help to exercise when feeling ill..and that running might clear my head up a bit.

What's your take on this? Exercise or rest when ill? (ill as in colds and headaches etc)

If you're just having a little cold & headaches, exercising a little won't hurt you. In fact the increased oxygen and blood flow could benefit you greatly with the headaches. Just make sure you stay properly hydrated, get a good healthy meal and don't go back into your full routine just yet. But a light run and maybe a mild round at the gym should be just fine. Also be sure to get plenty of rest and take a vitamin supplement. One of the best cures for a cold is a little R&R. Good Luck!

Just slowly get yourself back into it. Yes some fresh air and a small run will do you some good. Just take it easy.

don't stop all together just reduce the amount you do while your ill

A little exercise will help. Drink more water

Well Dr's say not to excercise when ill because your using your energy up from the foods that contain nurtirents that you need to help nurse you back to health but if you drink more water and just some more vitamin see and some carbs (though no need to go overboard) you should be fine when exercising.

definitely exercise! just not as much. i think you should skip the martial arts, but maybe jog around your block and do some exercising at home. it'll make u feel better!

Still do exercise but gradually work yourself back into it, the body will need the energy to fight off the illness but some exercise could help your body recover quicker. I'd just stick to the running and maybe build yourself into the gym but leave the martial arts until you recover. You don't want to overwork yourself and be left with a bigger headache than when you started.

I have heard that most proffessional sportsfolk do not excercise/train, if they are under the weather. I would take a leaf oot their book and greatly reduce your training until you are feelin' a lot better.Not sure whit the risks urr if ye dae overdo it!! Guid luck...
