crunches are easier on the body so I'd recommend those. Don't bother with sets of less than 25 unless you're working a pyramid. I'd say 200 should be good but this assumes variations 25 regular crunches, 25 to a side, 25 to other side, legs at 90 degree angle off the ground, 25 feet planted, etc.. you know, do a routine. Just remember to strengthen you lowerback muscles as well.

crunches but make sure to breath right people say when you start out only do 15 to 20 even if you dont feel much or you know that you can farther cuz if you do much to fast then you will make it harder for you to burn more

it is better for you to go for some gym class i think..
you should do some weighting.. good luck..

do crunches sit ups do very little for the abs

do both and do different moves (like going to the sides instead of just straight up).

since you are a healthy male i'd say start with

10 regular sit ups
10 to the left
10 to the right

crunches are super easy. maybe start with

20 regular
20 left
20 right.

build up to the point where you are doing hundreds all together.

there are also more moves you can do. like kick out the opposite knee of the knee you are going up to when doing right and left. put your legs straight up in the air. try lots of different ways to reach all the muscles.
