Xanyx and weight gain?...I quit smoking last summer, hopefully for good.?!

Question: I started taking xanax, only 1 half to one half milligram a day and have been taking it at bed time since then. I have NOT been eating more, I am calmer and do sleep better, but I have gained 15 pounds that I can't lose. Has anyone else gained weight from the drug?...i asked my doc and he said it's possible, I would like any info or history you may have. thanks.

Side effects listed for most medications are very long and broad. While weight gain may be a potential side effect for xanax, it is very rare. I would look more to a mulitfactorial reason for the weight gain. You say you quit smoking. Smoking cessastion is frequently associated with weight gain. By adding the Xanax, you say you are sleeping better and calmer. Although you are eating the same, you may be expending less energy due to the calming xanax and less nicotine. Cigarettes (and nicotine) and anxiety are usually appetite suppressants as well. Now that you have less anxiety and no nicotine you may be prone to eating more than you realize. Perhaps increasing your output (more exercise) would solve your problem. I would not blame xanax alone for the weight gain.

I don't know if it's true but I have heard that Xanax and Zoloft affect your thyroid. This could cause weight gain. My doctor did verify that Zoloft can affect your thyroid but I didn't ask about the Xanax... Ask your doctor if this is possible.

Good for you for quiting smoking!!

But, that is the reason you've gained weight. The chemicals and toxins in tobacco and tobacco smoke are so unhealthy that they retard the body's ability to process the nutrients, fat, calories, and fiber from foods. Your body is working correctly now and you are getting all the calories, fat and fiber from the food you eat. You may have to cut back on the calories, or pick up on the exercise from now on.

My father smoked for 30 years, then quit "cold turkey" when his life-long friend died of lung cancer. He gained 30 pounds in about 2 months. But he had always been too thin. I've heard lots and lots of people claim to have gained weight from smoking cessation.

Again, great job on the quitting....you'll live longer and healthier. I wish you the best.

When you quit smoking you slowed your metabolism down (no Nicotine ) . You also slow down your metabolism with xanax. maybe this combination is making you gain weight ... I'd ask my doctor if i was you...
also................. CONGRATULATIONS on quitting smoking , I know how tough it is because I've been trying to quit (haven't made it yet ) but I'm stubborn...I'll get there.
