That's great! It sounds like you've got a good and intense work out. How long does it take you to burn the calories? About 40 minutes?

Do you enjoy it? If you aren't enjoying the activity (once you get going) you can vary your cardio, or bring music to keep it fun. Try different machines (elliptical, treadmill, stair master, arc trainer, outdoor running, stationary bike, spinning classes) or go to cardio classes. There are lot of different kinds.

You should be doing 20-60 minutes of cardio 3-5 days a week for optimal cardio respiratory fitness. A lot of fitness sites recommend burning at least 300 calories per workout, but personally I find that a little slim. It may be that 300 is a number for beginning exercisers, an "entry level" kind of number. 500 sounds great. You go, girl!

You might want to remember that you can also do less if the mood strikes you. Less intense, less frequent, or a shorter period of time...just don't stop altogether.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has guidelines for physical activity on their site below. The recommendations are for healthy adults under 65.

Here's the thing, and by no means am I an expert. 500 calories is plenty to burn at the gym. It doesn't stop there just because you're done working out. You're burning calories all day, plus your metabolism should be pretty high from working out and burning that many calories. Diet is important as well so watch the caloric intake.
