Do you keep on exercising when you're sick?!

Question: Uhg. I'm the mother of 3 and we've gone through the flu, a nasty cold and a stomach virus in the last 5 weeks! All of us have had it. I'm trying to do 30-45 minutes of cardio 5 times/week but I keep getting too sick to get off the couch! I'm feeling a bit guilty about not keeping up with my goal -that and I just like to exercise and miss it. How do you know when you should just skip it and rest and when you should do it anyway?

my rule of thumb

above your shoulders work out
below shoulder sit out

I always skip it when I'm sick, but I probably shouldn't. Exercise releases feel good hormones (endorphins) so exercising when sick will probably make you feel better, but I'm like you... I don't wanna get off my butt to exercise when I'm sick... lol!

now if your throwing up or got diarhea (or anyother stomach prob)... I would def. not exercise

exercising when sick burns about three times the calories, also leads to fast recovery from the illness as you are increasing circulation, your immune system response, and are ridding your toxins at an increased rate... I always look at being sick as an oportunity to drop weight quickly through exercise, I always do twice as much when sick and will even fast or eat very little, I always recover quickly

also, anytime I feel a little sick or like I am going to be sick I take alavert which is an allergy tab, but it seems to get rid of about everything or make it so I'm not bothered much, one tablet gives 24 hours relief and has no side effects that I can tell

I'll usually do cardio through a cold, maybe even a bit of weight training but a flu I think I'd just let that run it's course. In the grant scheme of things, a week of downtime isn`t gonna hurt you too much.

Lots of rest is your friend when you have a flu or stomach virus. It's telling your body to rest, so listen to it and stay on that couch!

When you start to feel a little better, (no fever, throwing up, etc.), then just start with an easy walk around the block and work your way up to your true cardio workout.

The more rest you get, the faster you'll feel better and get back on track!

No excercising. Your body needs rest, slow down girl.

Getting hit by a train could not keep me out of the gym... Its called mental toughness... Sounds like you have it... How bad do you want it??

Notice all these average people and their responses... If thats what you are going for by all means rest... If you want to rise above the herd love...and be set apart... Go...

Stay off the exercise until you are better as respitory problems (ie cold & flu) tend to stick around for a couple of weeks.
Also best to try and keep warm whilst outside.
I am type 1 diabetic and I know when I am well enough to exercise but skip at least 4 weeks when I have the flu & a cold.

So the answer is, only you can really know when you are well enough. If you are better then it will normally take a week or so (does for me at least) before I get back into it. I think about it as little as possible beforehand since I have zero enthusiasm for exercise but saying that am pretty fit tho.

Why not go outside for a 20 minute walk and see how you feel after that?

It depends on what KIND of sick I am. If I have a headache, I exercise, because usually once I get going it helps me feel better. Anything with my stomach I don't exercise. A mild cold I feel I'm okay to exercise. But sometimes it's healthier for you to just rest!

When you are sick your body needs all its available resources especially rest, to get well. After you are well, you will be able to exercise and get back in shape. Do not feel guilty . In fact your trying to do cardio may be what is keeping you from recovering faster

Never feel guilt about not doing exercise while ill. You should never take part in any cardio while you are ill. This is because itcould make you worse.

I think you should maybe go for a little walk to get some fresh air and once your better go for it!

no that is only going to make you sicker

I would just do some exercises at home at my own pace. If you go to the gym you'll spread germs and it won't be as easy to go at your own pace.
