I sometimes fall asleep after eating:Why?!

Question: I know that it is extremely common for people to get sleepy after a large meal, but if I sit I must struggle-even at work-to stay awake. It lasts a good hour or so before awakeness takes control. I am 48 and 288 pounds. The thing of it is is that I often have a diet soda with caffine or even a coffee at the meal!

Caffeine doesn't affect some people outwardly so it may not be useful at all.

When you have just finished eating your body has to digest all the food. Because metabolism uses energy, most of your energy goes toward the center of your body for the digestion of food. This will cause you to feel tired or listless. This is also why many people will feel cold in their hands and feet right after they eat. With less blood flow to the rest of the body, your body gets colder.

Once your body has finished metabolizing a majority of the food, you'll wake back up. On an average it will take between 30 and 90 minutes.

Also, try eating less foods that have carbs, or that are known to have the amino acid tritephen (makes you sleepy). These will cause the tiredness to last longer and be more severe.

when u eat a lot, or at all. your body has to work to digest the food. i have the same problem and take medication for it. our bodies work much harder then the average body which makes us sleepy. i know it sux

Unless you are 7 feet tall I would suggest losing weight!

You are eating to fatty of foods. Your body is sucking you out of energy because it is all going to digesting and absorbing the food you eat.Fatty and greasy food takes tons of energy to digest. If you eat healthier and lose some weight you wont have this problem. Caffeine will not solve your problems it will just make you sleepier.
