Question: i normally do squats, deadlifts, and goodmornings and i tried to to do lunges for the first time and hit my knee on the ground. i can only imagine what a barbell full of weights might do. any comments?

Do half lunges. Your knee should not go past your toe. Lunge half way, sort of like taking a big step forward and going down a little when you step. Lean back a little when you do your lunge and that should help your knee from pronating. Do it with light weights first, not a barbell full of weights. Or try no weights, until you get the movement down. You can do damage to your knee if you aren't doing it right. So be careful.

lunges can be bad for them, lunges are best done in water during water aerobics (safer and easier on joints there)

Yes lunges can be dangerous for your knees, thats why its important to do them on either a soft surface, or even better, a plyo board.

only if you do them wrong! technique is key.

When not done correctly they may be dangerous but lunges (along with any other single leg exercise) are good for the knee joint because they activate the vastus lateralis muscle more than exercises involving both legs (squats etc.) which lessons your risk of developing a muscle imbalance which can lead to lateral tracking of the kneecap, bow legs etc.

Maybe your step is too big. You should maintain control and make sure your torso is moving straight up and down and not leaning forward or anything.
