Ah, I know exactly what you're talking about, I saw this episode and actually tested "L's theory".
As it turns out, yes, your brain burns calories, it uses about 1 tenth of a calorie simply to survive, and if you use your brain to solve a puzzle or some math problems--your brain will burn off something around 1.5 or so calories per minute. This is not nearly as much a burn as you would get from exercise--but it still burns off calories--and the great thing is that your brain can be used all day---so you'll never stop burning calories with it.
Now in L's case, he is a genius, so the amount of calories his brain burns is sufficient enough for him to eat what ever and never gain weight (his weight is around 120).
I started a daily work out for my brain, playing the games "Brain Age" and "Word Coach" and some Sudoku on Nintendo DS for 30 minutes a day everyday---and I kept my diet the same (and I do eat junk food) and what do you know, in two weeks my weight dropped by 7 pounds.
So it seems like L was right for the most part.

He also played tennis! I suspect it was more to do with the tennis!
It may be true on a small scale but, overall, muscles use much more energy than the brain. Physical exercise is vastly more effective.
