Good work-out plan?!

Question: My little brother came to me today and was telling me he wants to get into better shape. He was asking what he should do, but I wasn't exactly sure what to tell a beginner...He isn't overweight, at all - but I guess he just wants to lose fat and gain muscle, which is understandable.

Is this a good plan to start with for him?
- Run (As long as he feels he can) - at least four days per week.
- (I go to a 'Hot Yoga' class every friday) so I said he should come with me.
- There is a mountain near our house, I hike it every Saturday - again, I told him he should come with me.
- Weight training every other day (Alternating between muscles)
I figure it doesn't seem to extreme, right? Or is it? I do not know what would be best for him, to be honest.

If his stats would help -
15
5'10
140 lbs.

Thanks.

That does seem like an awful lot for a 15 year old beginner but maybe if he has support he can do it. I would just hate for him to feel defeated from the start and quit because it is too much too soon. He does need one rest day per week, and really he could use two.
How far is he going to run? If he is used to running that might not be too bad. He will get used to it.
I think the yoga is fine (I LOVE hot yoga!!)
Hiking is fine and the weight training seems ok too- not sure what kind of split you do just so long as he starts on the lighter side in terms of weights, and works up.
He seems to want to do it so at least he is motivated. :)

yes that is because i had alot of fat at the beginning of the year, and i started hiking, swimming, cardio workouts, and running to start! i gradually went into weight lifting! I'm toned now but i wasn't then! i think it is perfect! because I'm 15, I'm 5'5, and weigh 130 now!

Im working out as well, but for a 15 year old and thats his first time- im thinking it would be a little too much lol!
Im thinking a 15 year old would give up easily- so start off small and simple then build up and ask him whether he feels like building up on it every week!

Yes, but start out slow like walking first then increase to running after week or so or whenever he feels is right. Lifting weights and push ups/sit ups is deff a plus (around 3 times a week-don't over exercise) eat healthy-no junk food obviously.
If he keeps to it he will get in shape in no time!

Your work out regimen is based on the length of time you have been exercising. Your brother is not you. If he hasn't been exercising regularly he needs to begin small and work up to your routine, otherwise he might do some serious damage to his body not just with muscles but with internal organs. Of course it is always advisable to have a physician check him out first if he hasn't had a sports physical within the year.

Walking or jogging for about 30 minutes every day along with prescribed reps in weight training with a partner two days/week and some yoga in between would be a nice balance. And be sure to warm up before beginning any exercise...take it slow and don't engage in over kill at the beginning, otherwise there may be burn-out after a week or two and that defeats the purpose.

BTW, Mark, in what area will your Julliard studies be focused?

That sounds like a lot but he probably can do it. I think it is nice that u, as a older brother, would spend the time with him, as a younger brother. I knowmany ppl dont like spendin time with their brothers.
but i think with help from u he could do it. and if it doesnt work out ( it he gets worn out or tired) u two could just cut the workout shorter.
