Gastric bypass surgery.... should i do it?!

Question: I am 21 years old and 5 feet 7 inches, i weigh 280 pounds. I have always been a little overweight due to my thyroid problems that i was born with but it just let my weight spiral out of control. I have tried excersizing, diets, pills and all i seem to do is lose 10 pounds and then just hit a point where i am not losing anymore weight. Most of my eating habits formed when my husband joined the military because everytime he has to go away for a long time i get depressed. I have gained 90 pounds since my son was born in october 2006. i have also developed back problems, and sleeping problems. I really want to do it but i need some support. My husband says i am fine how i am but i dont believe him.
Please if you're going to post something rude or call me fat just go somewhere else. I want serious answers not childish name calling.

Have you discussed it with your doctor? Most insurance companies now require you to be on a doctor supervised diet for six months and lose 10% of your current weight, have a psychological evaluation and have a certain number of illnesses directly caused by your weight and documented before you can get the surgery.

There are some things you need to know about it.
1. It is a lifetime change
2. Although your stomach will be small, it will stretch and you will be able to eat more; so gaining weight is possible
3. You will still need to exercise and eat healthy
4. You will need to take protein and vitamin supplements along with B12 shots the rest of your life. Some of the vitamins will have to be special, like E, because fat will by bypassed you will not absorb it so you will have to get dry capsules
5. You may have extra skin that will not go away without plastic surgery
6. Sugars and Carbs begin to break down in your mouth so you can still gain weight.
7. Not all people get "dumping syndrome" or get sick when eating sugar and carbs, thus it is easier to gain weight. There is no way of knowing until after you have the surgery if you will have it or not.

There are a lot more things, however I don't have the space to list them all. Feel free to email me if you would like more information.

Serious answer? You put the pounds on, and you should be able to take them off. Sure, it's hard, but it's not impossible. And you're not fat because of the 50+ reasons you just listed.

Why waste money on gastric bypass - not to mention put up with the side effects and consequences - when all you need is exercise?

all of us women dont see our self the way our husbands do.. trust me i think i look ugly as hell but my husband thinks different.. all i can say is if you had tried diets and pills and everything else..then girl go for it.. have the gastric bypass surgery done.... i know i would.. if i could afford it i most deffently would do it.. sorry i can't spell that much.. if you do go through with it....you will have lot of people that would suport you just here in japan alone. i will pray for you each and every day
if you are not happy with the way you look and you want to improve your self than yes go for it... like i said... i would if i had the money.. i would also get a boob job done too.. go from a A to a C. hope all works out for you..

Gastric bypass surgery is no magic bullet. Given the complicated nature of your several problems, you actually need a more comprehensive solution.

Some of your physical problems are caused by your excessive weight. When you reduce your weight to a healthy level they will most likely not remain problems. If you don't reduce, those problems will become worse over time.

First, you must have endocrinology help and probably medication to get your blood hormone levels within normal parameters. As you know, you also need to develop and maintain healthy exercise and nutritional habits. This takes a lot of time and discipline to learn, but it is really worth doing so that you can experience the energy you need to bring up your children.

Loneliness can be difficult to learn to handle constructively. Finding vocational or hobby interests that really excites you can be a big help.

I have found a family of nutritional supplements which have helped me to keep to the healthiest weight for my height. Email me if you would like specifics.

Looking forward to a long and healthy life.

No. It will teach you nothing as to why you got that big. It is not a learning experience.

You will regret it when you start to gain weight again, you will gain weight again because you where never really taught as to how to make a life style change.

Do not ever let man cause unnecessary trauma in your body, especially when you are capable for fixing the problem yourself, you will feel better about it, and you will learn.

Do you homework!!

No, do not do it. Just start changing your eating habits.

You loose weight when you burn more calories than you consume (every day). if you keep that in mind, you know that every day you must to keep moving. Challenge yourself each day and make small goals.

You can loose it. I lost it without any crazy pills any surgeries. I was 300lbs 2 years ago when I started walking (now I run and train for a 5K marathon).

There's no need to call you any stupid names. In fact I admire you today and I am very proud of you, because the fact that you posted this question and you admitted to the rest of the world you have a food addiction and you simply don't move your body and are ready to change it.

So start moving, start walking (that's the best thing you can do). Put your walking shoes on, get a pedometer (and walk min 10,000 steps each day), put your favorite music on so, the focus is shifted to the beat of the music not to the pains in your leg muscles), drink 64 oz. water each day (I stop drinking 2 hrs before I go for my run, so I don't have to worry about full bladder). Give your body a chance and you'll be amazed how wonderful it will start to look after only few weeks.

I hope I helped you a little. Good luck.
