What on earth does cruciferous mean?!

Question: Carrying the cross? Is this a reference to Simon of Cyrene?

Answers: Carrying the cross? Is this a reference to Simon of Cyrene?

It can mean carrying a cross. In botany it means related to mustard (apparently mustard seeds have a cross on them if you view them under a microscope). So cruciferous vegetables are the cabbage and turnip family.

I thought that was a plant.

cruciferous vegetables are things like broccoli and cauliflower not sure what it means tho.

Of or relating to or belonging to the plant family Cruciferae, which is the flowering plant family Brassicaceae - known as the mustard family or cabbage family. I believe the seeds are thus marked, if you look closely enough.

The name refers to the way the branches of these plants are arranged, but breeding methods have introduced varieties that don't follow a strictly 'cross-like' branching pattern.

If you divide a 'head' of broccoli, or a cauliflower, you can see the various symmetries of the branch structure.

Many cabbages still follow the 'cruciform' branching pattern, and you can see this by peeling leaves off. Each pair of leaves will branch from opposite sides of the stem, and the next pair will branch at a right angle to the previous pair.

broccoli ,brussel sprouts
