It works and I think the muscles get more toned. One warning though, make sure to stretch your muscles well before pilates. You will be using muscle (especially in your legs) that are not used in everyday floor exercises. (I had a bad experience with not stretching well beforehand and woke up two nights later with screaming hamstring pain). Other than that, I enjoy pilates 3 times a week now, alternating every other day with 25 min cardio exercise...no more spasms. Pilates is a good flip to aerobic exercise.

It does work, but if you are not already somewhat toned it is not a miracle worker. If you are toned, it is great for upkeep and defining muscles.
