Count your calorie intake now in a typical day. If its under 2500 then your eating too little anyway so keep eating the same. However if your eating more cut it down.

To be healthy you also need to be eating the right foods. Having 2500 calories for a man or 2000 for a women a day means that you have enough to do exercise, as well as the necessary things like breath, walk, digest....
You should make sure you eating the correct percentage of food per day eg. fats 25% protein 40%!

Everyone is different, so you would need to seek advice from a fitness instructor.
The instructor will ask you questions about lifestyle and fitness then draw up a plan unique to you. After a few weeks your fitness levels will rise and you can adapt the plan- so you are running for longer and maybe faster.
If you are generally fit with no joint/muscle problems, I would suggest for the first week walking for 15-30 minutes then jogging for 5. Increase jogging time by 5 minutes each week.
It's a gradual process, but after 6 weeks you should see a significant difference.
Combine a healthy balanced diet and maybe incorporate some free weights exercises to strengthen muscles.
Try not to weigh yourself- muscle weighs more than fat. You can judge weight loss by clothing becoming loose/tight.
