How did my fitness improve so quickly!?!?!

Question: I'm genuinely not showing off but I started swimming 2 weeks ago after doing virtually no exercise for years and managed a whopping 100 metres and couldn't do any more, I even had to have a rest after 50 metres. But now 2 weeks later (swimming every 2 days) I can easily swim 1.5miles without stopping and could swim further.. Do any fitness experts know how this is possible because it's confusing the hell out of me!
Note: I'm 28, 6' 2" and weigh about 175ibs. I also smoke 20-30 a day.

well mr stabby welcome to the world of mystery that is fittness (though i'm sure its pretty simpily explaned using science)

around a month and a half ago i started using my little lady's cross trainer. the first day i got onto it i could only manage 2 mins at the very lowest level. the next night it went up to 4 mins. i then proceded to go to 10 minutes the next day and then went for the big jump to half an hour.
i'm now currently working at about 1 hour 2 to 3 times a week and half an hour with 30 minutes body resistance and weight training thrown in 2 times a week.
i didn't smoke ciggies but i used to smoke bongs at least 4 times a day for about 7 years solid (shame on me i know but i did enjoy it). i still enjoy the odd one now and again but thats a different matter!!

i think its fair to say that it's easy to build a bit of fittness as long as your willing to put the time and effort into it. the same goes for the other way though as it is certainly easy to lose fittness after not exercising for a few sessions.

keep up the good work mate ;-D

Some of it could be attributed to good genes i suppose and high metabolism and can swim pretty good.

Yes fitness does that, I am nearly fifty, and after a long lay off was unable to do more than five minutes cardio.

Less than two weeks in, I was running 14 miles in 1hr 45, 4 or five times per week.

Trouble with fitness is you can't store it, it vanishes just as quickly, if you ease up!!
