How do you stop yourself from eating and snacking when you dont need too?!

Question: I don't stop myself. If it is something I really really want then I take some, enjoy it and move on.

The reason most people can't say NO is because they think they "SHOULD" say no and worry about it and fret and feel guilty even looking.

For me, I KNOW there will always be more snacks in the world. If I say no to something my coworker brought in, so what? It's not the last time I will ever see Chex Party Mix, for instance. There are plenty of ways to get some if later I decide I want some.

I also don't believe in "bad" foods. As a dietitian I realize certain ways of eating lead to health and other ways of eating can produce problems. BUT...it's not because of one food choice or one food that people become overweight or develop diabetes or cancer or heart disease. It is the overall way we eat that moves us in one direction or another.

I WANT to eat healthy food. I want to be healthy. Because of this most of the time I make choices that reflect this. And now and then I like to eat just for pleasure, because something looks and smells fabulous or I KNOW it tastes fabulous. That is okay.

What happens when you don't allow yourself to do that (due to being on a strict diet or making these lists in your head of "good" vs. "bad" foods) is that you feel a strong urge to eat foods you normally don't love. If you think you are not allowed to have a brownie....then when you SEE a brownie you will want it more than anything! But if you remember you are ALWAYS allowed to have a brownie...then you don't really want one all the time. Or you only want the best!

Going on about the brownie. If you haven't allowed yourself to eat brownies and then you finally give in and buy one...you end up eating ALL of it even if it's not a good one. I know, it used to happen to me and it happens to almost all of my clients. What's the point of that? Why eat a slightly crappy brownie just because you haven't had one in a while? Would you eat a bowl full of overcooked broccoli "just because"? Probably not. So have that attitude with all your food. If it's not healthy or DELICIOUS...forget it.

Think about how much you REALLY want something before having some. Are you eating JUST cuz it's there or because it was something you were really wanting? Don't eat "just because" ... eat on purpose because it's what you really really want and it is really really amazingly good! IF it is, then slow down...ENJOY the amazingly good food and take your time to savor the flavor, the texture, the smell. Really get all you can out of each bite.

I don't stop myself, I eat healthy things or drink water to fill me up.

brush your teeth instead

Tell your friend, or family member that if you do, you'll give them 10 dollars..

You'd be amazed........

I try to think about something else or keep really awesome fruits around that I tend to love. Keep the other stuff out of the house completely.

have the same problem i don't even necessarily like the food i just feel like eating and its not like im overweight or out of shape or anything

When you eat when you dont need to the most likely reason is because of bordem, just occupy yourself and you'll forget about eating =)

gum or water does the trick. =)

I dont I still snack and munch just I do it on healthy things

Brush your teeth
Drink fluids instead
Chew gum

I drink water or chew gum. Actually, tea can be really good for curbing an appetite as well.

Drinking water, playing with something [a braclet], or brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth is the best one in my opinion. If your still feeling hungry after this, it most likely is real hunger.

I usually either:
take a bath
drink tea (fills you up)
do chores that need to be done
or anything that takes my mind off food!
excercising when youre hungry will also make your endorphins go up and not want to eat anymore

I usually go smoke a cigarette. Not that this is recommended, of course, but you asked what I do.

Smoke cigarettes

Drink water when you feel like snacking.

smack on gum, tic tacs, or a sweet fruit instead(canalope)
when you want to go snack, do something else instead, read, go outside, or just remind yourself you dont need it!!

I haven't figured that out yet. I never remember all the advice people give, like leave the room, call a friend, chew gum. I have people keep my snacks away from me so I don't eat them all at once.

get out of the kitchen, find something prouctive to do...away from the kitchen. Don't buy snacks and unhealthy foods and bring them home. Obviously you are going to eat it; maybe not that day, but you will and you know it too. Pace your meals. 3-5 small meals a day. Drink water half your body wieght in oz to be exact ( ex: weigh 100 lbs= 50 ounces of water/ day).

i just dont..

if you ignore your bodys craving for foods for a week or so you notice they just disappear and suddenly you no longer 'need' to have something to eat even if you arnt hungry.

There are a few things you can do.
First try to find something else to do with your hands, like either playing a computer game, writing, or even sewing, anything that catches your interest. If that doesn't work, try drinking water. Lastly if none of that works, your body might acutally be hungry. Try snacking on a few baby carrots or pretzels. They are relatively low in fat and calories. Hope this helps.

There are several tricks I use to keep myself from overeating:
First, I always drink a glass of water before eating any meal or snacks. It's been proved that typically when a person thinks they're hungry, they're actually thirsty and their body is craving water. We misunderstand that craving for hunger and eat. By the way, the glass of water will also keep you from overeating at snack or mealtime.

Second, I eat four to five smaller meals a day instead of two or three larger ones. Lots of people think that skipping breakfast is a good idea...NOT! You should always start your day with a small meal and then continue to eat ever few hours after that. If you eat more smaller meals, you'll never get sooooo hungry that you want to eat up everything in the house.

Third, and this part is the biggest challenge for me, I've tried to substitute the refined carbs in my diet with whole grains. In other words, instead of having white rice or pasta...I make brown rice and whole wheat pasta. Instead of regular pretzels, I have whole wheat pretzels or even carrot chips (carrots cut into large flat slices). Because these choices are whole grains, they'll keep you feeling full longer. They also won't make you sugar crash so you crave food all the time.

Good Luck!
