Need Exercise Tips Low Impact On Ankles -10 points for best?!

Question: I suffer from chronic ankle sprains that are taking a tool on my ankles and have found that I can not do what I used to.

At this time after my last sprain, I am not allowed to do any exercising for at least 3 more weeks.
But I am looking to find exercises that I can do that will not hurt my ankles once I am able to. So please suggest any thing that you think is low impact on ankles.

I have pretty much come to the conclusion that my rebounder, which I love, will not be something I can do anymore as I was having pain before this last sprain.

I know what you mean, I've torn the tendons in my right ankle three times now, so I'm very careful about how I work out.

The best advice I can give you is to work out in a pair of shoes that have high tops for lots of ankle support. The old Converse All Star/Chuck Taylor shoes are probably the greatest (and cheapest) shoe I've ever used for working out. Also, for the first few weeks, always wear an ankle brace for extra support.

You can do any exercise you were doing before, but you need to take it slower and be careful. It took me a while to work back up to running on the treadmill, but I can do it just fine now.

If you have access to a gym/rec center, then you can use an Elliptical trainer to do your cardio exercise. Ellipticals are easy on your joints and don't hurt your ankles as much as running or jumping would. Bicyclilng is also another great low impact workout, as is swimming. In fact, the last time I messed up my ankle, I swam for most of my exercise, since it was really the only thing I could do.

As for weight workouts, you can still do all the regular upper body exercises with no worries, but you should use machines if you are doing any lower body exercises as there is less of a chance for injury that way.

Lift weights while you are sitting, crunches, push ups, bicycling, and swimming.
