After stopping smoking, the weight increase should not be there. I was a chain smoker, around fifty king size cigarettes per day, I did not gain weight.
You should have regular eating habits, It is not necessary that you should go for precooked foods, these in fact contain preservatives, catalyst and other chemicals which are not good for health.
Freshly cooked foods, more proteins, you should take fats also in sufficient quantities for your daily needs. You have cut down on alcoholic drinks, drink more water, no beer, baked potatoes are good, some exercises will be necessary for trimming the body. There are books on ' Range of motions- exercises'. Some of these have 12 week course, this really trims and strengthens the body. I have done it and the results were very good and I am doing it again. I shall give the name of the book, which I am referring, tomorrow.
If you these exercises then food restrictions will not apply to a greater extent.

I would really suggest on going on a meat and veggie diet. It's basically eating most meat, and juyst add some healtrhy fruits and veggies into the mix. (thats one type of it)

Here is a site for the atkin's diet:

I hope this helped.

eggs are a good source of protein and have almost zero carbs. green leafy veggies, any meat and fish. pork rinds are a good snack they have zero cards.
you can do cheese on that diet as well.

Low carb diets are going to be more expensive, because proteins tend to cost more then carbohydrates do. Stock up on eggs from a local farmer, yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu canned tuna, and visit a bulk food store for nuts and dried beans. dont cut carbohydrates comptelely, thats very irresponsible!

I totally understand about not being able to afford the prepackaged food. I've used Atkins diet sucessfully and best of all it doesn't have to break the bank. Eggs, Cheese, broccoli, use lower fat protien such as turkey bacon, ground chicken or pork. Lots of salad. Good Luck!

drink lots of water , don't season foods a lot (saves money also) get more vegetables and fruits and a little less meat break meals up into 5 small ones like bigger snacks 5 times a day. also try the health cerals in bulk at sams club ihave the golean crunch and it was like $ 7.36 and its a lot of ceral my mom and me went on this very similar diet together and we lost about 5-7 pounds a week good luck
