Can you lose a decent amount of weight by just working out and not changing your!

Question: I joined a gym a month ago and have been going 4 times a week for an hour each time. I do a half hour of cardio, followed by an alternating schedule of weight training. My diet is horrible, but I'm hoping that committing to workouts at the gym will payoff eventually. Everyone tells me there's no way to lose a substantial amount of weight without adjusting my diet.Is this true?

Hi diana.....hey.....tell you what. The exercise is wonderful for you! This is great. You will build muscle because your muscles are "flabby" from the lack of exercise for a long time. As you build muscle, you will add weight from the muscle. At the same time you will "tone" up, feel stronger, have more stamina, feel great! Hope you are prepared to continue with this exercise regime for the rest of your life up until you are retirement age, or whatever, because when you stop, you will go back to looking like you do now.

Now I'll tell you more. " If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you've always got!" Makes sense, doesn't it?

You are what you eat. Can't get around that. Sorry.

If you are continuing to eat badly, sure enough you are burning off the extra calories by your exercise routine now, you hope. But, like I said. Don't stop. You really need to change your diet as well.

Ok, ok....I'll tell you how to lose weight. First of all, you never "go on a diet". To "go on a diet" means that one day, you will "go off the diet". When you go off, you will begin to put back on all the weight you took off and generally more.

The word "diet" is not something to go on. It is a "way of eating". You change your "diet", you change the way you eat. Before, you ate and gained weight. Now you want to eat and not gain weight. By doing that you will automatically lose weight and it will be something you can live with the rest of your life if you choose.

You should NEVER GO HUNGRY!!!!!!!! That is a sure fire road to failure! Nobody likes to go hungry. You are NOT A RABBIT!!! So don't eat like one, OK?

Here's what you do......go to Walmart and spend $5 and get you a paperback calorie counting book.

In it will be listed virtually eveything a human would want to put into their mouth.

Limit your daily calories to 1500/day(for girls, 2000 for guys). No LESS!!! With your exercise regime now, you can up those calories by 500 and you'll lose slower, but you'll lose. Keep em at 1500 and you'll lose much faster.

Spread those calories out anyway you want.

Eat healthy. Something you have not been doing up to now, and in your future you may want to lose even more weight.

Do not eat any fats/oils while you are trying to lose. Fat does nothing for you except goes to FAT! simple.
That means: no fast food (loaded with fats), no pizzas, chips and other snacks. NONE! After you've lost your weight, you can fit some in here and there and treat yourself.

No red meats. Not good for you because of the hidden fats in them. Limit your dairy foods to low fat/no fat dairy. But be sure you eat dairy foods.

No regular sugar or sweets. Only artificially sweetened foods and drinks. Splenda is wonderful and you can cook/bake with it.

You can eat lots and lots of skinless chicken (the skin has a lot of fat), any kind of fish or seafood, lean pork (no sausage or bacon because of the fat). Any of these can be cooked anyway you want EXCEPT fried. Remember, oil is fat!! Make sauces/gravies from creamed soups. there are wonderful ones out there!

Eat lots and lots of veggies. All kinds...As many as you want. Cook them any way you want to except fried. (You know why). You can stir fry them with some cooking spray only.

Use butter flavoring or Molly McButter to sprinkle.

Limit your fruits. They are wonderful but loaded with natural sugars and one may outdo themselves quickly!

Limit your carbs to one serving per meal. If it is white it is a carb and all breads, no matter what color or whole grain they are, they are a carb. Whole grains are very high in fiber. Eat as much fiber as you can!!! You will lose weight faster and keep your plumbing moving along smoothly.

So, forget about all the dietetic foods and junk like that. Eat good wholesome food and lots of it, just follow the advice above and exercise 20 minutes every day at least, and you WILL lose weight and tone up. This is a way of life and a way of eating you can live with the rest of your life and be healthy!!

Now you have a choice. Good luck to you!!

I am an RN

You should try to incorporate a healthy diet as well as working out.

Nope. I tried. Doesn't work.

yess you can lose weight by exercising lots watch that food tho..calories can totally defeat the purpose of exercising in the first place

Depends on how active you were prior to exercising. You can't eat too much or it will not matter.

One key to losing weight, INCREASE your water intake!

You can not lose wgt with exercise alone

you dont have to change your diet a lot. just pay attention what your putting in your body and realize when your truly full. that was my problem. i tasted good food and just kept eating. lol

weight lost on the scale does not neccessarily mean a loss of body fat.

exercise only expedites the weight loss process the diet ultimately determines the body composition or the amount of fat and muscle. you can't build a quality product with inferior raw materials. you are what you eat

Not if you are 34 years old and 224 lbs. At your age, your metabolism has greatly slowed down. You would have to work out extremely hard and often to lose a good amount of weight. You just need to find parts of your diet that you are willing to change. Ex. Fewer sodas, do not eat after 7:00, etc. Just a few changes will help you lose much more weight.

not really you will gain muscle then your weight will stay the same!

your diet should exist of 6 small meals
mostly a small breakfast and 2h later just an apple and 2h later(lunch) small lunch 2h later just some fruit and then atleast the dinner.
eat healthy with light and small meals and it will work.
This will increase your metabolism.

Only so http://www.us-ds.com/group.php?id=59&aid...

if you were really serious about losing weight you'd change your diet. if you're taking in way more than what's canceling out at the gym you're not going to lose weight. it's as simple as that. so unless you want to be 227 pounds for the rest of your life, take your health and appearance seriously and go on a diet as well as exercise.

yes that is true,

nutrition is 70-80%
training is 20-30%

you have to eat balanced diet meal several times a day

besides that you should weight training FIRST and followed by cardio.

cardio alone does not change your apperance
work out does.

resistant workout build muscles and muscle act as fat-burner
which means you burn calories while you are resting
the more muscle in your body the higher metabolism

and if you want to build muscles you need a good protein
compelx carbhydrates, dietary fiber, water.

IF you stick to a pretty healthy diet and just eat what a true portion is you can lose weight with the exercise. Some times it's not so much what we eat but HOW MUCH we eat. A true serving is often about a third to a half of what we eat as one serving. IF we just go back to a true serving and eat six meals instead of three big ones we would lose weight with the addition of exercise.

You probably won't get very good results unless you work on your eating habits, too, but the good news is, even small changes add up, and you can find changes in your diet that are relatively painless.

My brother, for instance, realized he ate a lot of butter... on bread, vegetables, potatoes, etc. He decided to quit eating butter on top of things and that really helped him to lose weight.

What you might want to do is keep a food diary for a week, and see what kinds of habits you have, what you care about, and what you might be willing to change. Maybe, for instance, you tend to eat a candy bar in the afternoon, and might be able to switch that habit to a piece of fresh fruit. Or maybe you can switch a bagel in the morning (high in calories) to a high fiber cereal. Or maybe you can give up drinking juice (high in calories) and eat a piece of fruit (higher in fiber).

Personally, i'm not into deprivation and giving up stuff i really love, because i know i can't keep doing it long term. I don't want to yo-yo diet, i want to be a healthy weight for a lifetime. So instead i've looked for habits where i'm eating not so healthy food but i don't care a lot about it. I found i can eat more fruit, salads, and soups and be pretty happy. I don't like commercial cookies so much, either, and fortunately, i can live without soda. But i love good desserts, so if i am willing to eat salad or soup for lunch, usually i can have a dessert later in the day. In the end, it's all up to you and what YOU can live with, long term.

You do have some wiggle room in your current eating habits, so i think if you write everything down for a week... no judging yourself, just writing it down... then you can look at it and decide some small thing about it to change.
