My mom just called me fat! Help?!

Question: I'm 5'8" and 170 pounds. I'm a US size 11. But today my Mother came straight out and said "You're fat. You need to lose a few pounds before you go off to college."

I have Compulsive Overeating Disorder. I'm not trying to give an excuse, but I've had THERAPY for this-therapy that she paid for. And yet...she STILL doesn't know what I went in for! She hasn't even tried googling "overeating" or anything.

I've never been able to stand up to/talk to my parents. Can anyone give me some tips on what to say the next time my own mother calls me fat? Or do you have any tips on how to stop binging, if you've been where I am?

Well, first thing you need to do is learn to stand up for yourself.
Many kids don't do this, cuz they are afraid of losing the "perks" of being subservant. Like free car insurance, etc.
The road to independence is not paved in comfort. Letting your parents walk all over you just so you can get free stuff, is a common problem with kids. The sooner you grow out of it, the better off you'll be. Maybe not financially, but in every other possible way.
It might even help you with your eating disorder. Your stress will be different, and maybe even lessened by "getting it all out" with your parents.
Good luck!

I know what you mean I binge a lot. I don't hae COD but I do eat way more than I should every few days. make sure you only have healthy food around. if your mom is so blunt as to call you fat then it should be no problem convincing her to get rid of all the junk. when you binge, binge on vegetables. I know how hard it is to stop yourself from binging so just eat foods with fewer calories

You are just BARELY overweight. Your BMI is 25.8. A healthy BMI = 18.5-24.9. So really, if you dropped a mere 10 pounds - you'd be in a healthy range again. The easiest way to do that is to eat a healthy diet and get some physical activity every day. No need to go crazy on deprivation diets that will cause you to binge. It's not like you're 50 pounds overweight. You're 10 pounds overweight. That's NOTHING.

So the next time your mother calls you fat - share that information with her. Say, "Actually, my BMI says I'm maybe 10 pounds overweight, and I'll lose it in a healthy way in my own time. Don't push me - it's not like I'm 50 pounds overweight. And if you think I need to lose more than that - then you obviously have an unrealistic image of the female body."

As for not binging - seriously - don't do deprivation dieting. Eat anything you want -- just plan for it. Since the beginning of the year I've lost 20 pounds eating pizza, ice cream, whatever I want to eat! I just plan for it and count it in my calories. I journal everything that goes into my mouth. I make healthier food choices (most of the time) because healthier foods fill you up faster and keep you full longer. And - I get at least 1/2 hour of intense physical activity a day. That and some dedication - food doesn't have to be the enemy and you'll be inside a healthy BMI in no time.

ha. Fattie.

I'm 5'9 and weigh the same as you. Wish I could still get into my size 11s. It sounds like you being size 11 and 5'8" is good as long as your clothes aren't skin tight you sound fine.
Just losing the weight isn't the answer it's learning to eat what your body is wanting. Ever eat something and still be hungry? It's because you didn't give your body what it needs. Nutritrion is what your body wants and that's why you overeat. You're actually starving your body from the nutrition it needs. Example: if it's wanting vitamin C and you eat french fries you're still hungry cause your body didn't get the vitamin C. Give your body what it is craving and needs to survive. Try staying away from fast foods and processed foods that have no nutritional value what so ever. Eat smaller meals or many snacks that contain lots of nutritional value and a well balanced dinner. Eating out seem to have larger portions than your body needs so try home cooked meals. If you're craving something sweet eat a banana it will satisfy any sweet craving.
Try talking to your parents. They've raised a young lady that is going to college and will listen to what she has to say.
I hope this helps, I've fought with my weight for many many years so be happy with your food choices and don't starve your body from the nutrition it needs. You'll be happier when you're eating better.

Overeating is not a disorder. Just stop eating so much. You're fat, and you should lose a few pounds before you go off to college. The next time your own mother calls you fat, you should say, "Yeah, you're right. I'll stop eating so much."
