Get into swimming. This is non impact and FANTASTIC for your fitness and improving muscle tone :)

Also walking is a great low-impact exercise - try this for atleast 30min 3days a wk...increase to what u like

You could by yourself an exercise ball and sum dumbells - not only will you be strengthening your core and building muscle (which burns fat) but the support the ball offers and the exercises you can do sitting will deduct the amount of pressure on your knee when you are weight training.

GOOD LUCK

:)

Swimming and bike riding have been recommended by my doctor.

Swimming is always good if you're looking for super-low (or no) impact. Otherwise, simply walking more can help you to lose weight, as long as you're also reducing your calorie intake. Good luck!

okay well if you're looking to lose weight in general, i don't suggest running since you have a bad knee. first off make sure you eat a well-rounded diet, and possibly trying very low levels on the treadmill or exercise bike so you're not putting so much weight on your knees. i have a bad knee too, and what actually helped strengthen it was to do band exercises (look them up online) and wieght lifting with the weight attached to my ankle, and by gradually increasing the weights you'll be able to strengthen your knee and thereby be able to increase the intensity of your workouts, as well. good luck =]

Leg extensions will help strengthen the leg muscles.
Also leg curls are good.
You can do them without a machine but you will find after a while
you will need weights as your muscles get stronger.
Start with 1 set of 10 every 2nd day, heres a link to the basic leg extension, by exercising every second day it allows your muscles to grow in strength. If you do a search you will find heaps of sites showing you how to do them.
But the truth is if your doctor says you need to loose weight
and you find it too difficult there is the operation option to curb your appetite.
Good luck.

Wall chairs helped my knees get through tough pain and this is from heavy lifting thank god i dont do it anymore. But wall chairs help and strengthen the knee joints. Heres a couple sites I highly recommend that have helped me with knee pain and helped me learn to talk again after a freak accident which left me confined to a bed for three months.
