Exercises for people with bad backs?!

Question: Me, my mother, and my fiance are wanting to lose a bit of weight by our wedding May 10th. The only problem is that my mother has a lot of back problems. Is there any type of exercises that she can do with us?

there are plenty of exercises you can do from a sitting position, and for targeted areas. I would say too, if she wants to lose weight, and she doesn't exercise now, I would tell her to just watch her portion sizes, drink lots of water, and walk when she can, start out slow... she can do housework even for exercise... but not to do too much, and to see the doctor if she wants to lose like more than thirty pounds. You can get some valuable information at www.slim-fast.com... You can also google: "exercise for back pain sufferers"

Water aerobics offered usually at the YMCA are gentle enough for her to do

Bad backs shouldn't prevent you from jogging on the treadmill.

Low intensity pilates is very good for the back.

Running
Walking
Swimming

My husband ended up with a bulging disc in his back.
He started taking Bikram yoga, the hot yoga.
I can't believe he stuck with it but he is now pain free.
If he misses a couple of times he can feel it starting up again.
He went off all pain meds. It's worked really well.

cardio

I used to work for a neurosurgeon and he had a pretty specific exercise plan for his patients with back pain that was nonsurgically treated.

He'd have all his patients walk. He'd have them start out easy, then increase the distance of the walk, at the same time shortening the time the walk took. They would end up taking long, fast walks and generally would eliminate their back pain. The walking is an excellent way to lose weight and improve the musculature in the back.

However, if you want to lose weight before the wedding, you'd better get cracking. Walk long, walk fast, and walk frequently! I've lost about 40 pounds in the past by walking but it took about 6 months to do so.

Depending on her condition, you can't really go wrong with moderate to brisk walking. With the proper diet, walking 3-5 times a week for 30-45 minutes can be very beneficial. She can burn calories and strengthen the heart. Of course diet is crucial in any exercise program. Eat a low fat, low carb diet that is healthy (no junk food).

After the walk, when she is still "warmed up" have her do some stretch exercises specifically for the back. Depending on the problem, you will be able to find exercises on the internet. There is a device called the Sacro-wedgy, that I hear is very good at reducing the pain in the lower back. Good luck!

DO NOT listen to advice about running! Running, especially on an incline, can be incredibly aggravating to bad backs. I hate surgery at 18, believe me!

Water aerobics, pilates and yoga have all been suggested and are all good. I would suggest looking into physical therapy--you can do a lot of exercises to strengthen your back and get in shape. If you want cardio exercise, try swimming or the elliptical--it's less jarring than a treadmill.
