Does yelling or grunting while working out actually do something?!

Question: yea, I saw a show on nat geo about human strength and it said that when you scream or grunt before lifting something or (in the show) breaking bricks, you release adrenaline and it helps your strength a lil bit more..... But yea, everyone will hate you at the gym lol.

No. They are just either trying to make themselves look cooler by showing how much effort they are putting into it with loud noises or they don't have enough self control to keep it down so as not to annoy other people around them

well its a way to release air, and that may help some people. like you now in martial arts when they make the sound theyre pushing the air out of their lungs

actually it does. its mostly psychological though. for example, when weightlifters grunt, its like their way of dealing with the burden theyre about to lift. it might also help release adrenaline and get them "pumped" to lift weights. i think it also helps with concentration...

try it when youre lifting something heavy! you might feel stupid, but its fun and it really does help!

Not for the kind of weight we lift...For power lifters at the world class level, yelling just prior to the lift has been proven to be somewhat helpful, both physically and mentally.

Makes you REALLY unpopular at the gym.

I do it on the leg and abs machine. I don't know why on just those machines and I do feel a bit silly since I work out at a woman's gym, but I can't help it. I am trying to feather my breathing (little puffs on the exhale) to stop the silliness. Not working though!
