Is obesity and being overweight the same thing?!

Question: Reading online, I've found that some sites use these words interchangably. Are these two classified as the same? Or are there different risks associated with the two. Is being slightly overweight as bad for your health as being slightly obese?

Overweight is like 10-20 lbs over....obesity is when you have hit that weight limit which heightens your risks of heart disease, high blood pressure etc.

"An adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.
An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese."

THis is from the Center for Disease Control - their definition of obesity and overweight.

the difference between the two, is your BMI. overweight is between 25-30 and obesity is over 30

over weight is classified as being between 1 and 25 pounds over your normal ideal body weight. Obese is classified as being 30 pounds over ideal body weight, and Morbid Obesity is classified as being 50 pounds or more over your ideal body weight.

you can go to the site I've posted and find out where you stand.

They are two different things. Anything 50+ lbs. overweight is considered obese (according to my doctor). A lot more health risks come with obesity. Being slightly overweight can cause some complications, but is much easier to get back to a target weight and health.

Obesity is advanced overweight. The snippet below will help you understand it better.

A BMI of 25.0 to 29.9 is considered overweight or hefty(at this stage you are not obese). At this stage you are becoming quite plump and your body fat is really more than you need.
