Is it unrealistic to expect an 8 year old to walk 3 miles?!

Question: We are going to be on vacation and my BIL doesn't want to stroll 3 miles because her son will get tired. My son is much younger and will be in a stroller, and I really don't know if I am being unrealistic or she is. Thanks.

Yes, I wouldn't be able to make my 8 yr old walk that far.

Yes that is very unrealistic. An 8 yr old doesn't have that kind of strength.

Depends on the child really. If she doesn't think her son would enjoy walking that far then that's her choice as a mother to make. I would try to just accept it and suggest something else instead.

They'll be whinning and complaining a mile into the walk, it is definitly unrealistic.

Take for example a weekend at an amusement park? Can the child take that physical stress? If so, don't worry about it, if he tires easily, don't even think about it!

that's realistic. My cousin was 10 years old when he did the Walk For Hunger and that was 20 miles.

I think if the boy hasn't been walking three miles a few times a week it is too much to ask. If the boy walks a couple miles twice a week he probably could do it. How about he brings a bike or roller blades to make it easier and fun?

I know ADULTS who won't even walk that far!

Cut it back to 1 mile. Or is it possible to rent a bike for them to ride along?

Of course not, as long as theres snacks & time to rest i don;t see why not.
You could always think ov games to keep him entertained, he woudn't even realise he'd walked 3miles

with a stroller it should be fine for the both of them
they could yes get tired

Absolutely unrealistic!!!

Three miles is a long distance for short legs. Some kids might make it easily, while others will be in tears halfway through.
Better listen to the mom's input. She knows her child. Can he use his "heelies"? Or ride a bike? or a "scooter" or skateboard? Maybe that would ease the pain of the hike.
