When doing any type of strength training, you need to let that muscle group rest a day between workouts, in order to rebuild strong lean muscle. So first of all, only do your abs every other day.

Standard crunches are about 10x more intense on a stability ball, available for about $15 at any fitness store or mass retailer like Wal-mart. I do some straight and oblique crunches on it to strengthen. For that lean look, do a reverse crunch: lie down in front of a sturdy piece of furniture, like the couch. Hold onto the couch behind your head, start with your legs up, perpendicular to the floor, and slowly lower to almost the floor, then repeat. Nice burn!

Another more efficient ab workout is yoga. Get yourself a DVD to start with--I recommend any by the instructor Suzanne Deason, since the video lets you choose beginner, intermediate, advanced. Yoga combines strength, stretch, abs, and meditation all rolled into one 30 minute or so workout. It doesn't feel like much at the time, but you will feel the burn the next day!! Yoga is really effective at working the whole core--abs, back, spine--because the shift in center of balance in the poses forces these to engage so you won't fall over.

Have fun!

Well first of all, your ab muscles are probably already well devoloped, but the trick is unearthing them. Which means alot of cardio, any excercise that burns calories will give you the fastest results. Best workout would be spending about 30 to 45 min on upper, middle, and lower ab workouts, and then run for at least 30 min as many days as you can.

I usually wont time myself but instead go untill i cant, and then some. my routine is i start out doing hanging leg lifts. ill 10 take 1 min break repeat that process untill i cant complete 2-3 reps at a time. then i will move onto the crunch machine stack on a good amount of weight. theres another ab machine where you push a bar forward while seated. then i always do back extension machine and a machine that you rotate with your hips as you sit down on it (works obliques).

heres an example of my workout when i want to kill my abs.:
1. Hanging leg lifts 4-5 sets of 10.

then a circuit of the following: (usually repeat this circuit 4 times)
2. Crunch machine 1 set of 10 high weight
3. the pushing machine (not sure of name) 1 set of 10 high weight
4. oblique machine set of 10 reps
5. back extension. set of 10 reps.

if you want to get big abs you need to do high weight low reps. i include the back extension with my ab workouts because it helps build strength in my core.

Personally, the best ab workout has included the following superset, which means go directly to the next exercise.

25 reverse crunches
25 crunches
25 bicycles

Repeat that 3 times.
