How do laxatives help you lose weight? does it really work or do you more harm t!

Question: Supposedly it makes food travel through your body quicker so there is less time for fat, nutrients etc to be absorbed when in actual fact the small intestine where the nutrients are removed isn't affected by laxatives. Laxatives only work on the large intestine and by the time the food arrives there there's only fibre and non-nutritional matter left so it's really just false weight loss as water. It does more harm than good in that it can make you dehydrated, make your colon lazy and unresponsive and can even cause more serious complications such as tumours.

they dont...they make you go to the bathroom
trying to use them to lose weight is simply a very very bad idea
no matter what some stupid internet expert tells you

Well i imagine it would keep you from storing excess poo, keeping your weight down not making you lose it??? I've not actually heard this one before, interesting

Laxitives are addictive so do not take them unless your doctor perscribes them .

more harm than good!

if u take too many they cause heart problems.

lose weight nwother way!

Anorexics use laxatives to make sure any food they are seen to eat goes straight through their digestive system. This method stops the body absorbing nutrients and fats from the food. It is a very dangerous way to control your weight.

They dont help you lose weight just poo!

They can become addictive and when you stop taking them your bowel could become damaged (lazy) because it has not been used to the natural passing of poo!

they only make you lose water, which means they will dehydrate you DONT USE THEM!!! the weigh you lose with them is water, not fat...

Laxitives do not help weight loss, and do cause more harm than good.
Please be carefull, eat a sensible diet and take regular exercise, there is no quick fix for weight loss.
I know you've probably heard it all before, but it's the truth :)

Blessings and take care you, Lulu x

I agree with the first guy. Bad idea, and they don't make you burn fat or anything like that. You will do more harm than good if you go down that road. Unfortunatley, there's no quick fix for losing real weight and for keeping it off, despite what some diets and dieters may have you believe. A short detox diet will help lose excess water and get rid of bloating if you want to look better in the short term, say for a special occasion but to lose fat you need to burn more calories than you consume and that equals excercise and sensible eating. Boring, I know...

This is a form of starvation.

Anorexics try to eat very little, so that the 'calories' in food can't affect their bodies.

Bulimics use as different strategy; they eat the food (sometimes in huge quantities) but 'dodge' the calories by throwing it back up afterwards, so that the calorific food can't be digested and absorbed.

Laxorexics use a third approach; they try to 'hurry' the food through their digestive tract, so that their intestines don't have much opportunity to absorb the food that's passing through.

There's a fourth strategy; Exerexics try to burn off the energy they have absorbed from food, by exercising constantly.

Most people with an eating disorder use several of these strategies, so excessive exercising is one of the 'classic' signs of anorexia. Anorexics and bulimics often misuse laxatives as well.

Overuse of laxatives will cause the 'friendly' bacteria (which help to digest your food) to be expelled from your gut, so thast your ability to get nutrition out of your food can be permanently damaged. These bacteria also help to control the more dangerous types (eg various kinds of Clostridium), and laxative abuse can allow these very active pathogens to 'take over' your digestive system and make you ill.

Laxative overuse also dehydrates you, because the water in your body is ALL absorbed from the 'chyme' (digested food) while it is slowly passing through the final stage of digestion, your Colon. If this happens too quickly, you can't absorb enough water. This kind of dehydration can become life-threatening very quickly.

laxatives are just for helping you if you are constipated.......brisk walk, treadmill, swimming may help you....or if you can afford it get a personel trainer.....they work for sure and they also help with your diet.....good luck

I am afraid they do indeed do more harm, upsetting delicate biochemical balance and also producing dehydration. Their use however is much employed by anorexics and bulimics many of whom do end up hospitalised sooner or later.
