Trying to avoid bad food at a kid's birthday party...please help!?!

Question: In about 3 hours I will be at a princess party for a 3-year-old. I am so excited, but worried at the same time. I have recently changed my eating habits drastically, and have avoided fast food since 2007, and greasy foods like pizza and fried things. But this party is going to have pizzas ordered in (which I love, naturally)! How should I handle this situation? I'm not a 'single slice' eater either! Self-control has hardly existed in my life and I don't want to fall off the wagon. Please don't be mean or cruel, I just want to hear from someone who has been in a similar situation. Thanks!

To be honest, you dont have much option, you either
a) go and eat, but try to control yourself
b) go and dont eat at all
c) dont go
d) take your own food - healthier
e) ask for healthy food - or just try to stay away from junk food.

i suggest you go for the party and just try your best not to go too near the food, have a tiny bit of everything....
just make sure you enjoy yourself!
good luck.

maybe bring something else to eat
ask the hostess if there are any healthier choices
eat somthing before you go
tell them you arent hungry
tell them you are trying to eat healthy now-a-days

I bet the pizza is going to get the upper hand. Maybe you could bring something to eat and explain to the party-giver how you feel. Or - could be an excellent way to test your self-
control. Gotta happen some time.

Eat before you leave for the party so that you are not hungry when you get there, and maybe take a yummy healthy snack with you to keep your hands occupied. And avoid the pizza table! Good Luck!

Walk around.. Go help out, go socialise, go play with the baby. Just do anything that makes you stay away from those food! And make sure you ate well before attending the party so that you won't feel hungry even when you're looking at those food.

You may wanna bring a huge serving of fruit platter for the party over if there isn't any there. And if anyone offers you any pizza, just tell them you had your slice and you're gonna eat some fruits instead. If not, just look for something else "healthy" to snack on. But my best advice is still to make sure your stomach is well fed before you head to the party.

So have fun!!

Cheers!

Bring a veggie tray as token and you can indulge in that.

you might want to just enjoy yourself and not worry too much. You can make up for it by eating nothing else all day except munching on a few veggies tonight.

Birthday parties don't come that often. Holidays and bday parties are ok to splurge.

Indulge today for this meal, but me extremely healthy tonight.
Don't let your diet get in the way of your having fun!

When I first went vegan, I found myself in situations like this all the time. I don't really have any magic answers, but here are a few things that helped me in those early days:

*Eat before you go. Have a big huge salad with beans or a bowl of oatmeal with fruit (something with a lot of fiber and/or protein) to keep you feeling full for hours.

*Bring healthy food with you. Go buy all your favorite fruits and make a big fruit platter to share with everyone. Three-year olds like it, too, and some of the other moms might be happy you did as well. Similarly a veggie tray with dip would work, but I find this isn't usually as tempting :).

*If you work out, too, you know how much hard work it is to take the weight off. If you don't work out, it's probably because it IS such hard work. Remind yourself that 1 slice of pizza with around 300 calories would take about around 45 minutes of jogging or aerobics to work off. Imagine how hard you'd have to work out for 2 or 3 slices! Hours and hours. Is it worth it? Eating it will only make you feel better while it's in your mouth. After that, well, there's enough bad in the world without bringing bad feelings upon yourself. Give yourself a reason to be proud of yourself, not ashamed.

*Make a new rule that says you only eat pizza on very specific occasions . Then, make sure this is not one of those occasions. Or make a rule that says you're not allowed to eat pizza for the next "X" time period (1 month, 2 months, 2 weeks, etc). Then follow your own rule. Sounds silly, I know, but give it a try. It's hard to follow other people's rules, but when it's yours, and you know you made it for a good reason, it's a little easier.

*You deserve a reward for good behavior. If you manage to avoid the pizza, give yourself a non-food reward. Buy that cute skirt, get your nails done, pick up a great new DVD, get one of those really expensive highly scented candles...whatever you like to treat yourself with.

Good luck. You can do it, hon. You're a strong woman who cares about your health!

I'm like you, self control is hard for me and I can't just eat one slice. For me, I have none. Bring your own lunch and don't touch the food. If you give in, don't consider yourself to have ruined your good habits, chalk it up to a special occassion. Beware though, it can become all too easy to make any reason an occassion to break. Good luck.

This is what's wrong with changing your eating habits drastically.

Here's what you do, fill up just before you go. Eat yourself silly.

Then, when the pizza comes, take one slice, then avoid it for the rest of the time. Just stay away from it.

But one day won't kill you.

You should always build some "cheating" into your diet, so you won't crave and end up binging.

Always eat a lot of good food, and get enough sleep every night.
