Early morning workout question?!

Question: Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on my current workout regime.

I typically workout in the early morning (05:30-06:00) for around an hour, concentrating on circuit training with weights, followed by a 4-5 mile run. To fuel my workout, I generally have a banana and a small yogurt (200kcal / 60g carbs in total).

I'm worried that I may actually be burning mainly muscle, because I train fairly intensely and forced to eat light in order to minimize digestion time.

Is this true, or am I worry over nothing?

Cheers

Matt

If you're trying to build muscle or even just maintain the muscle you have, I would advise that you lift weights and run on separate days or at least at differents times during the day. After working out for about an hour, your body releases a catabolic agent called cortisol which breaks down muscle to be used for energy until you take in nutrients. By running 4-5 miles after working out, you're just accelerating the breakdown process. If you absolutely must run right after you workout, at least rest for a little bit and take in some fast-acting protein and carbohydrates.

i think you are doing great...keep up the good work

Well if your body isnt getting the nutrition, calories and fat it needs to use for energy throughout the day then it starts eating at your muslces and using that as its new form of energy for your workouts. So it is very possible this is happeni

I'd suggest eating after your workout and eating some more carbs (toast, cereal, ect) and protein (eggs or meat). This should give you the proper nutrition to make sure you're not losing muscle mass. You may want to look at taking a protein shake after your workout. It will reduce the amount of recovery time and help you gain muscle as well. Optimum Nutrition makes one of the best proteins on the market (and best tasting). Mix up a protein shake in some skimpy milk and make sure you're getting the proper nutrition throughout the rest of the day and you should be alright.
