BMI vs Health?!

Question: I'm a 5'10" female who weights approximately 190. According to most BMI calculators, this puts me well into the overweight category. Here's my questions, I'm about a size 10, and I excercise several times a week, and am otherwise in good health. I just can't seem to lose pounds. I have a decent diet, and feel like i live a pretty healthly life style (obviously everyone could be healthier) In addition, when I see people on TV who give their weight as lower than mine, they look HUGE in comparison to me. Is it possible for me to have a higher BMI, but still be competely healthy?

Yes that is possible. BMI is inaccurately when it comes to fit people with a lot of muscles. One of the purposes of the BMI calculator is to give an indication of your fat percent. However, people that exercise a lot, may have a BMI which according to a BMI calculator would make them fat (30+), but still have a very healthy body, due to a low fat percent. A wide bone structure will also mean that you can have a heavier weight, without being unhealthy.

And remember: muscles are considered as healthy weight, so the muscles you have in addition, should ideally not be added to a bmi calculator.

according to the BMI charts many athletes are severally obese. BMI charts should be taken with a grain of salt. What is important is body fat percentage. BMI charts only take into account body weight, height, and sex. An athlete with 5% body fat can be considered obese according to these charts since muscle weighs more than fat. worry about fat percentage not those useless charts.

Some gym instructors actually tell people not to take too much notice of height weight charts and BMI. If you don't really feel overweight you are probably OK. A lot depends on your build.

Your ideal weight at 5'10 would be 150 lbs so technically you could be regarded as being about 20 lbs overweight. All these rules concerning weight must not be taken too literally. Most rules have the odd exception and you are probably one of them.

If you can't seem to lose pounds perhaps the reason is that for you 190 lbs is your normal weight.

Since I started to work out I was looking for a good weight loss product (I only wanted something 100% natural). I was on a diet but I felt that I needed a little "help" so I decided to try this great detoxification colon cleanse and I had fantastic results. You can check their website at
