Working out on an empty stomach?!


Question: I saw on a health website that you should eat a meal 3 hours before working out or eating a snack 1-2 hours before working out. It said that working out on an empty stomach will cause your body to burn muscle instead of fat. Now I don't know abotu you, but I am not going to get up 3 hours before I normally do to eat something then go back to sleep. In the military you wake up, do PT, then go eat breakfast. So with that type of lifestyle, how could I do my PT without losing muscle? Any ideas? If interuptting your sleep wasn't harmful, then I would wake up to eat then go back to sleep, BUT interrupting your sleep for any amount of time that is longer than it takes you to pee, is interrupting the detoxification of your body. So with that in mind, any ideas?

Actually 1 and half hours before would be fine, but if you can't eat than you will burn muscle, there is no choice or easy way out around this one, there really isn't, no fuel, than you are the fuel. You should eat/drink protein within 15 minutes of finishing your routine also

I actual pratice that. Yes excercise with no food intake within hours of work out then after workout you can eat something small and healthy.

I assume we are talking about strength training here, PT can mean lots of things with lots of goals. Body builders/weightlifters (muscle mass/strength) train differently from martial art trainers and from military (reaction speed/ endurance) . And even there there are differences - strength or muscle mass.
What makes sense for ones, is counterproductive for others.

The 3 hour requirement is told so 2 criteria are met : You are not starving (have energy) and your stomach is not full of food. Now this can be achieved differently.
Depends what you eat, foods are processed differently. For training, you need energy (aka carbohydrates/ fat is not burned so fast) + some protein to protect muscles. After training you need protein to rebuild the muscles and carbos to help using the protein and fill your energy reserves.
So, just drink protein shake 30 mins -1h before training, and eat after training for the best results.

yeah mate, thats the way it is in training, you will definatly be weaker finishing training than when you went in...

which sucks, but thats just how they do it, very strict schedule

ull still burn fat on an empty stomach, because u still got lots of fat on ur body, if ur pretty skinny which u will loose weight in training, if your skinny ull loose muscle, not if theres no food in there....your body dosent burn whats in your belly...

but in any case, exersize on an empty stomach, in particulat endurance training like in the army, lactic acid from the extreme workout will be dumped in your gut, burning your insides making you want to puke it up...so its always good to eat....


but thats just how the army works mate
