Anorexia Nervosa?!

Question: Am I right in thinking Anorexia doesn't mean you have to be thin? In that you have a distorted view of your body, but don't care enough to do anything about it?

Like an overweight person thinking they're more overweight than they are, but not caring enough to go to, what they consider, normal weight?

Or is Anorexia Nervosa determined to be not eating? Then it's still possible to be overweight, just not forever.

Just wondering, an overweight kid tried to use this at school before as a joke, saying he was Anorexic, just didn't care enough to change. I thought, and Wikipedia backs me up on this, that Anorexia Nervosa is "an eating disorder in which people do not eat correctly due to the obsessive fear of weight gain".

But other sites say it's characterized by distorted self image.

Thoughts?

Well, Anorexia is more commonly referred to as a disorder in where very little food is consumed for fear or getting "larger than they are". Its typically acting on a serious case of BDD (Body Dismorphic Disorder). Orthorexia Nervosa is the constant thought of food. Thats more so of a mental illness than anything. But since your body DOES go into starvation mode and will store are any food as fat after a certain point, not everyone has to be SUPER THIN to be anorexic. Some also just started or whatnot. Every body is different; especially if you are large boned like my anorexic friend is. Shes 145 lbs at 5'5" but her ribs are extremely visible.

Those distorted self image sources are just pansies. Always trying to blame things on mental "illnesses" instead of just plain ol stupidity.

well if ur overwieght and arn't eating i don't think ur anorexic at least not yet bcuz anorexics is a veeery thin person who literally starves themselves. If anyhting a big person could be bullemic i doubt anorexic at least not until they get to a frail thin boney seriously unhealthy stage...

No, Anorexia is being extremely underweight. You have anorexia when you starve yourself because of a distorted body image. Thinking you are fat when you aren't. Anorexia is a control thing. You feel out of control in your life so you focus on the one thing that you can control and that's not eating. Anorexics aren't overweight. Obviously if an overweight kid is joking about it then he's an idiot because it's not funny and if he's overweight then he's not worried about weight gain. In the future don't be so gullible.

You don't necessarlily have to be super thin to be anorexic, but most are.

It's just having such a horrible body image thinking your fat when your not and continuing to starve themselves

i think the person your talking about would more likely have symptoms more similiar to bulimia, that doesn't mean he throws up what he eats. It just meants he tries not to eat ( anorexia ) but fails and binges ( bulimia )

anorexia is running to be skinny and getting skinny in dangerous ways

its both I think. Cept it has nothing to do with not doing anything aout it. Its more like an attractive skinny male seeing himself as an obese ugly man. They focus on small flaws

Anorexia Nervosa is refusing to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height.
An anorexic also has a large fear of gaining weight even though they are considered underweight.
Symptoms of anorexia are seeing yourself as fatter than you are, however, to be anorexic, you must see yourself as fat, but truly be underweight.
An overweight person seeing themselves as larger than they are is just a normal thing.....or they could have body dysmorphic disorder.

To be anorexic though, you must be severely underweight. A person who is of normal weight cannot be considered anorexic. There are some who may portray symptoms of anorexia, for example, refusing to eat some days or thinking they are huge when they aren't. But that is not a true anorexic. Those people have an eating disorder that is called EDNS (Eating disorder not otherwise specified).
This is the most common eating disorder

A. Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height
B. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight.
C.denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight.
D. amenorrhea, i.e., the absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles.

this is the diagnostic criteria for anorexia. therefore if you don't have all of these criteria, you aren't technically anorexic, but you could be EDNOS, bulimic, have body dismorphic disorder or distorted eating.

i guess you don't have to be thin to be anorexic
but usually anorexics do something about it because they want to achieve their perfection
but i don't think an overweight person can really have the distortion because they actually ARE overweight
and because anorexia is an obsessive fear of weight gain then anyone who has it would try and fix it since they are so afraid of it
and anorexia is also a distorted self image because when people get extremely thin they still can not see themselves clearly they still see the obese person they were or think they are
