Why are there so many calories in seeds? How are they fattening?!

Question: I bought some mixed seeds as I'm on a diet but they have loads of calories and fat in! Would you eat them if you were dieting?

Seeds (and nuts) are very high in calories because seeds are mostly made of fat. However, don't be afraid to eat seeds or nuts on a diet. The fat they contain is monounsaturated, and is very good for your heart and overall health. You need some fat in your diet, and seeds, nuts, avocados, and olive oil are the healthiest fats you can eat.

The reason they are so high calories is because a gram of protein or a gram of carbs is about 4 calories. A gram of fat is 9 calories.

I would, and do eat seeds when I am on a diet... pumpkin seeds to be exact.

They're very filling and contain some good fats and oils, so they're a better idea for a snack then, say chocolate or crisps, but only in moderation.

because they contain the growth goodness

Small amounts only. 10 or 20 grams max.

seeds need energy to grow a tap root, then the root takes on the job of feeding the plant. The fat is okay, moderation of intake of your seeds could help your compliance to your diet.

Seeds have all nutrients for helping young plant to grow. It is natural that they are rich on calories. Some seeds ar rich on protein as well.
In most cases seeds are not the best option for dieting person, with an exception. If you do a low carb diet and need a filling food, seeds might be an option. still, you can not eat lots of them.

They are highly calorific because they are oily (most vegetable oils are pressed out of some kind of seed).

Seeds and nuts also contain a lot of highly beneficial 'micronutrients'. These are especially important when you are 'dieting', because some of the foods you are trying to eat less of will be the ones that contain these nutrients. For example, fatty foods often supply fat-soluble vitamins.

It's difficult to eat a large enough amount of seeds to gain weight, or even enough to properly supplement your nutrition. Try putting some in a pepper-mill, so that you can grind them onto salads and cooked dishes like a condiment.

seeds are high in calories because all seeds contain oils. oil is a fat obviously and 1 gram of fat is 9 calories compared to the 4 calories from a gram of protein or carbohydrate. when eating healthy, try to get your fats from seeds and nuts as these are healthy fats that help take care of skin and joints and even sometimes assist in losing fat. yeah... im on a cutting phase and i get my fats from almonds mostly.
