Out of all macronutrients, the body is the least efficient at converting proteins into bodyfat. For women, soy milk is an excellent source of protein. Just be sure you're consuming the kind that has no added sweeteners or other processed ingredients.

If you're serious about fat loss, cut down on the carbs, including rice. If you aren't already doing so, go for brown rice instead of white rice. For fat loss, all carbs should come from complex whole high fiber sources such as whole grains, legumes and veggies. Stay away from anything processed.

So what else are you eating. If you're living on rice and soy milk alone then, yes, you will shed pounds; but you'll also get very sick from being malnourished. It is important for the proper functioning of all cells in the body that we eat a normal healthy diet.

Soy protein increases estrogen levels.
Estrogen increase fat storage.
Soy protein, therefore, increases fat storage.

So yes, it can. Get away from the vegetarian diet, it is not healthy.
