Being a certified fitness professional will be a prerequisite for many facilities. While a college degree may not be a requirement, it is beneficial to have a degree, no matter what profession you choose. Management positions often require a college degree.

Certification is usually a voluntary process instituted by a nongovernmental agency in which individuals are recognized for acquired knowledge and skill. It requires assessment, including testing, and an evaluation of education and/or experience. In some instances, individuals who seek certification may already hold a license. Also, certification may be nonvoluntary for some professions (i.e., required by the profession) and may be considered the equivalent of a license to practice (e.g., EMTs, nurses, athletic trainers, occupational therapists).

I highly recommend you obtain a certification from agencies accredited through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) or The National Board of Fitness Examiners (NBFE).

Both agencies evaluate the processes and systems used by an organization to identify professional role and scope of practice, develop exam content and provide proper exam administration and scoring.

There are great career opportunities you can explore. Besides the certification links below that are listed in my sources, I suggest you also check out the following sites:

You do not need a degree to be a trainer but you must be willing to learn as much as you can about your trade. Remember, you will be responsible for working with people who have had injuries, hypertension, diabetes, etc. Do not do this if you are not willing to learn all you can because your actions can hurt someone.

ISSA is a great place to get your certification because their testing and textbooks require much attention to detail. It also help if you have actual experience working out. It makes it easier t comprehend what you are being taught.

Other areas of interest in the fitness field are: strength and conditioning coach, fitness bootcamp instuctor, etc. You can keep going on your certifications or even continue on to a degree and take it to whatever level you want.

You are only limited by your imagination, so think and dream big.

If you really want to make this a career consider sports medicine, physical therapy, health education, physical education or something similar. Check out the web site below and go for it.
