What food stuffs... veg or fruit that contains natural serotonin please?!

Question: most foods dont contain serotonin itself (bananas are mainly dopamine btw iirc but they do contain a small amount of tryptophan, the only fruit that does, actually) by many contain the serotonin precursor tryptophan which your body converts to serotonin.

These are:
- Cheese
- Turkey/Beef/Pork/Chicken/Salmon
- Eggs
- Rice
- Sesame and sunflower seeds

Potatoes, Bananas, Milk all contain small amounts (10%~ of the list above)

i'm pretty sure potatoes either contain serotonin or stimulate serotonin production in the brain

bananas, brazil nuts.

Serotonin is a brain chemical. It is not found in food. Your brain makes it when it is healthy.
If you want more good brain chemicals, get out of bed in the morning and go running. The oxygenation and blood flow will stimulate brain chemicals.

I eat bananas & brazil nuts to help me deal with my D. Certain foods help to release the bodys natural serotonin, some are listed in the following link.

pretty sure anything with carbs... and lots of protein

duno about seratonin but I'm pretty sure there's something in turkey which is meant to be uplifting!

walnuts, almonds, cheese, turkey,

There is a LOT more to it than that. It sounds like you would like to get off your prescribed 'meds' for whatever personality disorder you are being treated for (bipolar, depression, etc).

Meds produced by pharmaceutical companies can do one of several things:

They can stimulate an increase in production of serotonin in the brain, which may or may not 'fix' a chemical imbalance (if one even exists). They may cause lesss of it be reabsorbed by the brain (SSRI's or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) :

SSRIs increase the extracellular level of the neurotransmitter serotonin by inhibiting its reuptake into the presynaptic cell, increasing the level of serotonin available to bind to the postsynaptic receptor. They have varying degrees of selectivity for the other monoamine transporters, having little binding affinity for the noradrenaline and dopamine transporters.

MAO-A inhibition reduces the breakdown of primarily serotonin, epinephrine, and norepinephrine and thus has a higher risk of serotonin syndrome and/or a hypertensive crisis. Tyramine is broken down by MAO-A, therefore inhibiting its action may result in excessive build up of it, so diet must be monitored for tyramine intake.

Tryptophan is an amino acid needed to create the seratonin in the brain, and tryptophan can be found in things like turkey meat, etc.

St. John's Wort is widely used in Europe to treat depression.

Serotonin (or 5-HT) usually inhibits and is involved in arousal and sleep, mood, appetite and sensitivity. However, it is also excitatory and is part of the brain's reward system producing feelings of pleasure.

People who suffer from clinical depression may have too little serotonin active in synapses so they may benefit from taking a Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitor(SSRI) e.g., Prozac to extend the serotonin activity.

Serotonin rich foods are carbohydrate based e.g., pasta, starchy vegetables, potatoes, cereals, breads.

But you must understand that most of the serotonin in the human body is in the digestive tract and controls digestion, etc.

Natural serotonin is produced by the body during the digestion of healthy foods that contain the amino acid L-Tryptophan. Although there is a variety of foods that contain L-tryptophan, such as meats, fish, dairy, mangoes, barley, brown rice, sunflower seeds, bananas and peanuts, much of it is lost through cooking and processing.

Here are three ways to get more natural serotonin into your body.

1. Health Foods: Drink a whey protein milkshake every day. We do. We put a scoop of chocolate flavor in a blender with a half a banana and some skim milk. It tastes delicious and helps keep your tummy flat too.

If using a blender is too much work you can get these milkshakes in ready to drink packages. Put some in the refrigerator and enjoy one a day.

2. L-Tryptophan Supplements: These were off the market for a long time due to one bad batch made by a foreign company. Now they are back and have passed the regulatory requirements for purity. One company that makes these is Doctor's Best.

3. These super high quality brain and mood formulas are made by a company we have great respect for. The editors of this website have used many of their products with great results. Their pure fish oil is also recommended for support of brain health.

Been fooled by a t.v myth I see
Seratonin is a neuro-chemical used to trasmit messages across synapses so as much as you eat it you are going to get the "happy vibe" from is as it is going nowhere near your nerves, sorry folks.

Best way to get the kick from serotonin is by doing somthing you enjoy like listening to music, going for a run, drawing, sticking with the food thing eat some chocolate. I must stress again nothing will give you a serotonin just by eatings it.
