Laxatives and weight loss?!

Question: I had to go on a liquid diet and drink a small bottle of laxatives for a medical procedure I was having done. I lost a few pounds over night because of this. I realize most of the weight lost was water weight-- since you often become dehydrated from laxatives.

I was wondering if this was safe? I'm not planning on using laxatives regularly-- running to the bathroom every second is not my idea of fun. But is there a way to maintain the weight I am now since I've lost a few lbs from the laxatives/diet? Is there a safe way of doing this? I really don't want to gain it all back after one meal, which is what I'm assuming will happen.

Suggestions?

Actually no. This can be very dangerous to your body. I am sure that when they had you on this diet that you were not on it very long.
The reason why it is so dangerous is because you need a certain amount of water in your body. Because it is not just 'water' that your body is excreting so quickly. It is also excreting the potassium and sodium in your body that your body needs to maintain something us professionals call homeostasis. Without the correct amounts of electrolytes in your body then your body is being deprived of the minerals it needs to function properly.
Not only will you experience very adverse reactions to this, such as dehydration but you will end up being very sick in a very short amount of time.
My best advice to you is continue having a normal diet without laxatives (a fluid diet also does not provide the body with the correct amounts for you to function probably as well) and excerzice. SO that you can have the firming properties that only excercize can provide!
Hope that helps!

no

well you said it's for a medical procedure, so why don't you ask you DOCTOR?

It's not safe at all. Honestly it's a terrible way to even maintain a weight - if you have to use laxatives to maintain a weight, you didn't lose it correctly in the first place.

Laxatives make food go through your system SO quickly that nothing is absord, not even the nutrients your body needs.

Don't resort to laxatives - eat properly. Exercise.

not safe stick with healthy food and regular exercise truusssstttt me!!!

don't even go there. have you heard of Bulimia? Bulimics use those when they are not purging. it is not safe what so ever.

I had a friend in high school who lost large amounts of weight using this method. But, now in order to have a bowel movement, his system requires laxatives. It's a shame.

As you say you are dehyrated so dont kid yourself that you have lost weight.

If you want to lose some weight and keep it off...eat sensibly and regular exercise. Long term laxative intake can have serious implications!

Laxative dieting is not good. Sure for a short term day or two you can lose the pounds, but if you do it consistently you will lose complete control of your bowel movements and cause serious internal organ damage. Stick to a 1200 calorie diet a day and you will lose weight, trust me. Good luck!

i would not recommend this it is not safe,
i dont care who the heck would tell you this
you dont want the risk of bleeding thru your rectum,
it happens.
when u take to many laxitives to lose weight

Personal experiance!

Listen eat sensible,

and Get A L L I

they have a website,
they have fourms for questions okay?
and they have a number as well,

its safe

it worked for me perfectly i was 200- i am now...using it for 1 year i am now. 134 and excersize is very important.

Okay so it isn't really good for you to do that but what can do is eat healthy and exersise and have a defict of calories. So that say you eat like 2,000 calories a day well you would burn so many over that amount that you ate.

This website explains it all pretty well I think and it has calculators to calculate various things like B.M.I. and calories and weight loss plans and staying healthy and fit plans etc. here it is.....

i really doubt that its safe... laxatives cause diarrhea, which causes dehydration... the first time you did it was under doctors orders... i dont think you should do it. i am trying to lose weight myself, after having two kids.. just cut out soda and sweets, and stay active. hope this helps!

eat alot of fruit and vegetables and excersize! Dont try and find the easy way out or the weight has a good chance of coming back very easily

Laxatives is actually controversial not in the sense that people have to have diarrhea to lose weight but that it may not even work.

To gain weight your food goes through your intestines and the calories are absorbed with every movement they make. With a laxitive you are just flushing away waste faster. You would think at first that it's better than being bulimic right? Wrong, the food is already in your system when you take laxatives unlike vomiting, where you are making the food exit before it gets absorbed into your body (I'm not recommending vomitting).

Also a side effect is, if you take medicines they won't have the same effect if you are taking laxatives to flush them out of your system.

It's not safe, It's not very effective, I strongly recommend dieting and excercise.

NO WAY! Laxatives are NOT a good idea at all. If this was a medical procedure from a doctor, I have no idea what's inside their head. Here's a way to lose weight:

Despite what you may think, losing weight isn't a mysterious process. In fact, weight loss doesn't even have to involve strange diets, special exercises or even the 'magic' of pills or fitness gadgets. Want the secret to weight loss? Make small changes each and every day and you'll slowly (but surely) lose those extra pounds.
Rules of Weight Loss

To lose one pound, you must burn approximately 3500 calories over and above what you already burn doing daily activities. Whew...that sounds impossible doesn't it? Here's how it works.

Calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate). Your BMR is what your body needs to maintain normal functions like breathing, digestion, etc.
Calculate your activity level. Use a calorie calculator to figure out how many calories you burn while sitting, standing, exercising, lifting weights, etc. throughout the day.
Keep track of how many calories you eat. Use a food journal to add up what you eat and drink during the day. If you're eating less calories than you're burning, you'll lose weight.
Example:

Mary's BMR is 1400 calories and she burns 900 calories in daily activity. To maintain her weight, she should be eating 2300 calories but, after keeping a food journal, Mary finds that she's eating 2550 calories every day. By eating 250 more calories than her body needs, Mary will gain one pound every 2 weeks.
This example shows how easy it is to gain weight without even knowing it. But it's also easy to lose weight. In fact, you can start losing weight right now by making a few simple changes. If you can burn an extra 500 calories each day, you'll lose a pound a week and you won't even have to change your clothes. Try these ideas:

Instead of.... Do this...
Having an afternoon Coke Drink a glass of water. (calories saved: 97)
Eating an Egg McMuffin Eat a small whole wheat bagel +1 tbls of peanut butter (calories saved: 185)
Using your break to catch up on work or eat a snack Walk up and down a flight of stairs for 10 minutes (calories burned: 100)
Hitting the snooze button Get up 10 minutes early and go for a brisk walk (calories burned: 100)
Watching television after work Do 10 minutes of yoga (calories burned: 50)

Total Calories Saved: 532 (based on a 140-lb person)

Focusing on daily changes is the best way to reach your goals. No, you won't lose weight overnight but isn't it better to permanently change your life for the better? Say it with me: My Health Is More Important Than My Appearance. Repeat that 10 times a day and you're on your way to better health.

Hi there... i'm not sure what procedure you had to drink that for....however, with that said...its probably none of my business. Anyways, point being is that i had quite a bit of weight to loss and nothing about my body was cooperating. Upon giving up on doctors - i went to a naturopathic and i realized that i had a yeast overgrowth. There are many things that can affect a yeast overgrowth - you can have it and not even know like me. It make cravings absoltely unbearable. Anyways, my weight was spiraling out of control, my mood was horrible, and i was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. My naturpathic shook his head and handed me a tea. I faithly drink this once in am and once in pm, and i wouldn't be without it - I honestly, and this isn't any lie...have lost 35lbs drinking this tea, i still have pain but my fibromyalgia is definately managable now and i dont' cry in pain (by the way - i'm only 26years old). I also switched to non-toxic household products and it has made a world of business....I hope this helps you -- i can provide you will more info if this is of any interest to you.

Laxatives don't work. One, they speed up food movement so the nutrients you need aren't absorbed well, but you still get the calories because laxatives work on your large intestine which is after the small intestine where most of you calorie absorption occurs. Loss=water and nutrients .
