Confused about calories?!

Question: I started a calorie controlled diet 9 days ago after putting my details into a site on here (foodfocus.co.uk) it says for me to lose 4 stone it will take 6 months & I can have 816 calories a day. I've lost 5lbs up to now, but now read that anything under 1000 calories a day will put my body in starvation mode & hang onto every calorie I eat & store it. So now I'm confused as to whether I should be eating more, but still want to lose 2lbs a week to reach my goal by October. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

basically you need to find out how many calories you need to maintain your weight, then drop 500 a day from this to lose 1 lb of fat a week. a good formula to work this out is:

(bodyweight in lb x 15) - 500

so for your stats, it would be:

(170x15) - 500 = 2050 kcal a day

on this you should drop 1lb a week, if not drop your calories slightly

then aim to burn another 500kcal a day through exercise to drop the other 1lb of fat per week

dont drop too many calories as it is unhealthy and you will just lose muscle mass not fat. never drop calories below bodyweight in lb x 10

eat high protein (say 1g per lb), keep the carbs to about 1-1.5g per lb of bodyweight, get the rest of your calories from good fats
and dont combine high fat and high carbs in the same meal

calorie controll diets are wrong.

Count how many calories you eat , you can eat as many as you like because if you burn more calories than you eat you loose weight !

So eat a healthy diet ( balanced )
track how many calories your eating.
Burn off more that you eat
And you will loose weight !

816 calories is way too low. I lost a boat load of weight eating 1500 calories a day (1-3 pounds a week, every week).

Eat 1000 calories a day - you will take longer to loose the weight, but your body will remain healthy. 1000 calories is still a lot less than your body needs...

Eat at LEAST 1200 calories a day. That's the cut off point.

But just burn the excess calories and you will still lose the same amount.

400 calories is not a lot to burn every day.

Its not as easy as someone telling you a calorie amount without knowing your age, activity level, height, and weight.

816 calories a day may be a reasonable weight loss number if you are a very small person... but at that point, its likely you wouldn't need to lose weight.

You should provide us with more details.

You can still lose weight, but the second site you read about your body starving is right. You should have at least 1000 calories a day, and that's even pushing it. You shouldn't necessarily count calories, but focus on what exactly you are eating. If you're cutting any food groups out, you should stop that. Try to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and fiber and protein and drink lots of whatever. You should also exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 3-4 times a week. All of these will help you truly lose weight and actually keep it off.

By eating 816 calories a day you'll lose weight, but once you hit your target weight, you'll proabably go back to your eating habits from before and gain all the weight back, and then some.

816 calories is way too low. Eat between 1200 and 1500 cals per day to keep your body out of starvation mode, but still lose weight. Weight loss will be slower, but you will be healthier. Try adding a multivitamin as well to get all the needed vitamins and minerals as they are hard to get when your calorie intake is so minimal.

***Additional info- I checked the web address and it is working fine. click the link below for the daily calorie counter.***

You should go to www.webdietsuccess.com and check out the daily calorie calculator on the front page. It's awesome! All you do is enter in some information (age, height, weight, goal weight and the amount of lbs you want to loose each month) and it will automatically calculate how many calories a day you should eat.

I am certain that you can loose 2lbs in a few weeks or less and eat more than 1000 calories a day.

Good luck!

Hi, you should not be eating 816 calories per day,, this is a joke and it is right that you body will think its starving and so hold on to the fat that you have to keep you alive. The least amount you should have is 1000, and if you took a look on Rosemary Connolly web site I feel sure you will be able to find out exactly what you should be on. It goes by height, weight now, etc. Its strange, because the more you eat the more you loose on a healthy diet. If you eat breakfast, say 200 calories, a snack mid morning, 100 Cal's, lunch 200 Cal's, a snack mid afternoon 100 calls evening meal 400 calls, that amounts to 1000 Cal's. If you did regular exercise 3 times a week, you could probably eat alot more besides and still loose weight. Don't listen to these stupid people who think depriving the body of its fuel will make you loose weight,,, it will make you ill instead!

Just typed in www.webdietsuccess, cant find it,, the address must be incorrect?

Try this instead http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/log...

calor control diets dont really work... calories are energy. if you have too many calories the energy doesnt get used and gets stored as fat so if you just eat healthy and excersize youll be fine. I have about 1000-2000 calories a day and am not obese or overweight i am normal and some people say skinny but i do excersize three times a week for two hours a day(soccer) . What you are doing by eating 816 calories a day is starving yourself. if you do excersize that wont be nessesary at all. but if your into diets where you eat little and dont excersize try the south beach diet it really works.
