How Do I Choose A Personal Trainer?!

Question: So I'm going to get a personal trainer no matter what. I really need it.

What should I look for in a personal trainer?

Also. The price here is $280/month, 2x a week. I got them to put it down to $200/month, 2x a week. Is that a good price? Should I take it?

Actually, ANY help/info on PTs would be great. Thanks!

$200 for 8 sessions sounds reasonable. Definitely look for someone you feel comfortable with. Watch out for ones who try to guilt their clients into staying with them.

Make sure he/she really caters to YOUR needs and is able to MOTIVATE you. See if they can go beyond exercise programming to really educate you. E.g. Ask why they choose certain exercises, which fuels (carbs/fats) you are burning, what specific muscles you are using.

A good idea would be to ask them to help you start up a short- & long-term goal setting plan (free of charge) before exercising. This way you can monitor if their services are really helping you.

With private training: make sure they are registered (they should have a card). Be careful! As an exercise scientist, I am not a fan - accreditation is easy, and I have seen many PTs in very large/popular gyms who are completely hopeless!

Education is number one. College? What certification? Top 4 certs: NASM, NCSA, ACSM, ACE

Experience?

If they are willing to make a deal over price, they just want your money. $25 a session (hour)? The average is $60+
