Females and Pull-Ups / Chin-ups?!

Question: What are some good exercises to do to improve pull-ups and chin-ups? And what is a good amount for a female to be able to do, without giving too much muscle?

I don't mean to be obvious but to improve chinups you should do chinups. If you can't do a chinup yet you can try jumping up and doing a controlled decent or you can use an assist machine that you would stand on for the extra help.

Some other good pulling exercises would be bent over rows, seated rows, Lat pulldown (which is really very similar to chins), or you could isolate bicepts by doing curls.

If a female can do 5 full chinups i'd be pretty impressed. Most females don't lift weights unfortunately.

EDIT: Ok I see what you mean now. You don't want manly lats, shoulders and bicepts, but you want to keep on strengthening. It's difficult to strengthen muscles without gaining muscle mass. Honestly, If you don't want to put on muscle you won't get that much stronger.

I would suggest working out and just not eating enough that your muscles can rebuild themselves much larger.

And Kevin is completely wrong. Tricepts arn't used at all in chins or pullups.

pullups work your back and biceps. chinups work back and triceps.
