Why am I gaining weight? I'm working out and dieting!?!


Question: In November i was 104 lbs (I'm 5'6" and 18 almost 19 years old). In December I started working out 4 days a week and have stuck to it! I took 2 weeks off total, 1 week I had the flu and the other I had midterms. Now it is April and I am 113 lbs! Well I go between 112 and 114 depending on time of day. I am running 3 miles a day and eating healthy. Even healthier than I was before the gym. Please explain!

As many other people have said, you are gaining weight because muscle weighs more than fat.
That being said, consider this question: Which is more important to you - the number of your weight, or the way you look. Body builders have almost no body fat, but weigh substantially more than their recommended weight. Are they fat??
The amount you weigh is secondary, what is important, and what you should be monitoring is your measurements. You will probably see your weight go up, while at the same time seeing your waist size go down.

Your eating way more than you can burn off. I don't believe your building muscle because in order to do that you have to be lifting heavy weights as well as eating a lot of protein. So just work on your diet and cut out more calories

Each time workout, our body hotwires more muscles there to do the "work", these muscles will "feed" on fats and you'll develop a lean fit body in time. However, muscles add weight to your body, but don't let this decieve you, you aren't fat. Just the muscle weight. Keep it up! You should lose weight gradually.

because you are gaining muscle weight from working out. your are underweight though. you need to be at least 120 so keep gaining. 104 is far too thin. that would be underweight for me and im 5'1.

More important to what you eat , is how much you eat . Food makes fat . You can't gain weight by not eating . Cut down . If you're still not loosing weight , cut down some more .

you could just be gaining muscle, muscle weighs more than fat. so if i were you i wouldn't focus on what the scale says, more so on whether or not you are happy with how your body looks.

First, it doesn't sound like you should be worried about your weight.

Second, weight is a function of the calories that you take in minus the calories that you burn off.

While you weigh slightly more I'd consider whether or not you look (and in fact are) healthier. Lean muscle does actually weigh more than fat so you may actually look slimmer/leaner/healthier than you think. Lean muscle also helps you burn calories faster (everything else being equal)

Third one burns calories during regular daily activities and it may be that you're less active when not exercising. During the cold months that's typical. Perhaps you should consider ways to add small amounts of exercise to your daily routine. e.g. Take the stairs rather than the elevator or escalator. Add an after dinner walk to your routine instead of watching TV. Ride your bicycle rather than taking the car to nearby things.
