Does protein powder consumption cause any health problems?!

Question: Well yes and no....

I'm an amature bodybuilder, and take protein powder all the time.
Taking large amounts of protein puts a burden on the liver.

Just like a healthy liver can deal with a single alcoholic drink without a worry, if you constantly drink alcohol, the liver becomes over-stressed which can have significant health problems.
Taking normal protein amounts per day (I think 30 grams is the recommended amount for healthy normal people) the liver can get through this okay... but when you have lots of protein, this is a huge stress the liver is constantly under.

(I take around 150 grams of protein per day just through powder, plus eggs, chicken etc)

The remedy is simple - antioxidants! I take an antioxidant supplement twice a day (tea is also high in antioxidants) and these help keep the liver healthy.

Also, high protein foods are usually low on fibre. Make sure you eat vegetables, and high-fibre foods such as oats (oatmeal) or sprinkle a bit of psyllium husk over your breakfast cereal. Trust me on this one, I learnt the hard way what its like to pass a high protein, low fibre diet ;-) its not nice!

So in general, take the powder as part of a healthy diet, and you will have no health problems at all!
