Is 3,000 calories a day a little, normal, or a lot?!


Question: I'm 14 years old. I'm lightly active (walk to school and back home, and do Physical Education). I am 5'6" and 110 pounds. I calculated that I eat around 3,000 calories each day. Is that a little, normal, or a lot? I was wondering because people say I eat a lot.

For a girl your age, size, and with your level of exercise, 3,000 calories a day is a lot. I wouldn't say it is an unhealthy amount, but it is a lot. If you have just recently been eating this much, you should expect to gain around 1 - 2 pounds each week. If you have always been eating about this much, then you have a very fast metabolism and you need not worry about the amount of calories you are eating.
Also keep in mind that it is WHAT you're eating, not just how much. Make sure that you are eating the right amount of carbohydrates, protein, fat, and getting your vitamins and minerals.

If you are 5'6 and 110, then you have a high metabolism and 3000 is about fine, but try to make the calories healthy. But it doesn't sound like you really need to be counting calories if you weigh 110

It's a lot but if you can metabolize it, it's no big deal. You're still growing, after all.

way too much, because you're young, fairly small and are atleast moderately active, 1700 should be enough. but you're a healthy weight atm so alsong as you don;t start putting on too much weight from what you're eating I don't think there's ne reason to start cutting back on what you eat. calories also aren't the only measure of what you eat. make sure your diet is balanced and includes the recommended daily serves of fruit, vegetables, bread and grain, meat (including fish) and fats and oils
