HELP!! what types of fat are the healthy stuff and which are bad for you??!

Question: The worst kind of fat for you is trans fats. That's short for trans fatty acids. These fats are in most hydrogenated vegetable oils and margarine's. If you are looking for a healthy spread it MUST say 'No Trans Fats'. Hydrogenated oils are oils that have had hydrogen bubbled through them to make them solid or semi solid at room temperature.

Even if the oil is a 'good' oil, it will be made unhealthy by this method of processing. Most processed food, especially pies and pastries, cakes and biscuits will be made from hydrogenated vegetable oil. Chip oil should not be used more than five times because the oil gets water bubbling through it and trans fats are created. These trans fats are WORSE than saturated fat for clinging to the sides of arteries and clogging them up. .

Saturated fats are usually animal fats. These fats are solid at room temperature. Butter, lard and dripping are all saturated fats, but they are not as bad as their reputation suggests. IN MODERATION butter is better for you than the vast majority of margarines.

Mono unsaturated oils are the healthiest of all. Olive oil is a monounsaturated oil, and the oils in avocado are too, which both make them very healthy for your heart. Nut and seed oils are good too, but beware of palm oil, unless it's harvested and processed in a certain way, it can behave like a saturated fat in the body. All these oils can go rancid quickly in sunlight, so they should be kept in the cupboard when not in use.

The Omega family are good for you, as in Omega 3,6 and 9, but be sure to get the right balance. Most people eat a little too much Omega 6. The richest supply of omega oil is in certain types of fish, mackrel, salmon, etc., and nuts and seeds. Important in skin and brain function, you shoud try to get at least two portions of omega rich food every week.

Look out on labels for hydrogenated oils and trans fats and aviod them, and you can't go far wrong. Do most of your cooking using monounsaturaed oils, bought in small quantities and kept in a dark cupoard. A little butter on your bread is not bad for you and even has vitamins A and D. Good eating!

Saturated Fats are BAADD (usually the stuff found in processed food, and the visible stuff on Bacon)

While unsaturated are better (fish oils) Ect.

The fats that make up omega-3 fish oils are very good for you, and it's recommended that you eat 2 portions of oily fish per week.
Saturated fats are bad for you if you eat too many, but are fine in moderation (eg. animal fats, butter, lard).
Polyunsaturated fats are better, but still should be taken in moderation (eg. olive oil, margarine).
