Carbs, Fats, & Sugar?!


Question: i've been wondering what's better to eat out of carbs, fats, and sugars. i know you need them all (minus sugar outside of fruit) but which is a bigger factor in weight? what is the difference between carbs in an apple and carbs in oatmeal? The sugar in an apple and the sugar in frozen yogurt i know the apple is healthier but sugar is sugar is it not? should i fear fat more or carbs? when i want a snack do i go for a spoon of peanut butter or is it better to eat crackers or oatmeal? when i scaled back on carbs and sugar i lost a tremendous amount of weight. salad dressings can have tons of fat and sugar & as many calories as a bowl of oatmeal or granola bar. what to choose??? SUGGESTIONS? INFORMATION? somebody please help explain it a little more. thanks again so much.

Carbohydrates and protein both contain 4 calories per gram whereas fat contains 9 calories per gram, so in terms of which is a bigger factor in weight its fat. Okay, so everything carbohydrate has sugar, but sugar isn't sugar in its own. The principal carbohydrates present in foods are sugar, starches, and cellulose. Simple sugars, such as those in honey and fruits, are very easily digested. Double sugars, such as table sugar, require some digestive action, but they are not nearly as complex as starches, such as those found in whole grain. Starches require prolonged enzymatic action in order to be broken down into simple sugars (glucose) for digestion. Cellulose, commonly found in the skins of fruits and vegetables, is largely indigestible by humans and contributes little energy value to the diet. It does, however, provide the bulk necessary for intestinal action and aids elimination.

In layman terms, some sugars are faster to digest (simple carbs) than complex carbs. Eating complex carbs (oatmeal) will keep you fuller for a longer duration because of its slow release of energy. Whereas simple carbs run out pretty quickly.

Should you fear fat or sugar more? The answer is none. You shouldn't fear any of it because your body needs these nutriants to function properly. You should however, look out for trans fat and saturated fats because these can clog arteries and lead to cardiovascular illnesses. And for carbs, I'd watch out for simple carbohydrates such as candy, cookies, cakes etc...Because not only do they pack on the pounds they also have little nutritional value and makes you hungrier.

Carbohydrates are your body's main source of energy, so most likely when you cut back on sugar, the body went to plan B and started taking the energy from your fat storage, hence the weight loss.

Yes, salad dressings can have tons of fat and sugar but it also depends on which one you choose. Creamy caesers would usually pack the most calories, so I always pick italian dressings. There's also dressings which come in spray bottles and are good for portion control.
