Is it fair to be graded in gym class?!

Question: I am graded {with letter grades} on my physical abillity. I don't believe this is fair. Do you? I have to do so many push ups and crunches and I have to hang onto this bar for more then forty eight seconds. Today I have to run a mile in under ten minutes. I think gym should just be pass/fail. I have a 4.0 average and now I am going to fail gym. Please respod nicely.

No, it's not fair. Kids are physically limited in some cases. Just because one kid can run a mile doesn't mean another one can. One thing I think is really unfair is when they grade kids with asthma and such the same as others. You should be graded on effort. And you're never going to use gym in real life. It's totally unfair. It has nothing to do with encouragment like that first poster said. They can encourage me to run ten miles but even if I want to, it doesn't mean I can physically do it. Tell your parents and have them get you out of gym. If you have asthma, you're a shoe in.

yes its fair, it encourages one to do better.........

I hated getting graded in gym as well.

I think that any grades should be for effort expended, not for results obtained.

It makes no sense to say that the kid who can shoot 10 baskets in a minute gets an "A", but the kid who can shoot only 6 gets a "B" ...

yes i do think they should at later times, start with what you can do and raise you ability then later grade i guess you should pass if you do the work if you walk instead of ran, fail :)

I think the gym grade should be that of effort and not actual qualifying numbers.

If the teacher sees you are putting your best effort forward, that should be enough to get an A.

Aren't gym classes the pits for people who aren't especially athletically inclined? Are you dressing out each day? Do you approach each activity with enthusiasm and try your best? If you're giving it your best effort, it might be time to have a parent request a conference.

i am guinea pig.

Yes its fair, they are trying to get you stronger and are trying to get you to build up your ablitys. You have to work hard to pass, gym isn't the easyest thing in the world to do for guys.. but if you work really hard you will pass it. good luck!! =)

I do agree with letter grading for gym class but I think it should be based on your own progress. Yes, you have to take the Physical Fitness Tests, that is a national thing, but I dont think that should solely determine your grade. I think your teacher should take a baseline at the beginning of the year in a lot of areas (how many crunches you can do, how many push-ups, your mile time, etc...) and then have a rubric for determining your letter grade based on your progress throughout the course. That is only fair. Also, I think kids should have the opportunity to do reports, projects or posters to get extra credit. Fitness and Wellness are not only about what you can do physically but what you know in terms of diet, lifestyle, etc... So, for the less athletically inclined, maybe a poster on the food pyramid would bring up a less than great gym grade. Besides, the kid who does the project would learn valuable information that would help in everyday life as he or she did the project.
But that's just me.....

Oh my gosh! That is NOT FAIR!
in my gym class, we are graded if we remember our gym clothes and shoes!
I am sorry, I hope you pass!!!!

my teacher grades my class on how hard we try, not if we can make it up a rope or not. (that was an example).
I think gym class should be graded on how hard you try, not if you can do something or not, that's just unfair.
