Is Raw Onions Good For Your Health?!

Question: Does raw onions really help to fight all sorts of diseases ?

Because it's a real pain and hassle to eat and I would not want to make myself suffer for nothing.

Heck, I even wear swimming goggles in order to cut my onions without crying.

Eating them is like chewing in sulfuric acid.

It's better be worth the trouble or else I'm going back to junk food.

Yes raw onions are good for health blood flow etc. You can grill them a little also they taste better that way grill on a pan with out any oil etc. for minute on each side.

Well since it is a veggie of course it helps. I love raw onions on food but not alone. Her is a tip to cutting onions without having to cry about it :) Um... cut them near the sink with the cold water running. For some reason it helps.

Green onions are great for you! Fry them up with potatoes. Add garlic and olive oil.

Onions make me fussy and bloated. Don't eat them if you don't enjoy them ...plenty of other good foods out thee !!

My grandfather died of Leukemia and the doctors told my mother & grandmother that raw onions help to cleanse the blood.
I eat about 1/4 raw onion per day.
Probably have bad breath, but healthy blood.

Skip the onions and skip the junk food. Try some fruits and veggies you do like. Onions are not essential.

haha.. I don't know, but they're defanitly not good for your social life! Eat a few onions in your salad every once in a while, but you don't need to go crazy and eat an onion like an apple! balance your antioxidents. Eat pomegranits, beets, leafy greens, green tea, berries, spinach, brussel sprouts. Onions aren't the cat's pajamas of anti-oxidents, so don't torture yourself too much!

You can eat healthy without living off of onions, you know. Garlic is better for you, but green tea is even better than that. Just eat your fruits and veggies and you'll be fine. I do hope you're chewing lots of gum and using mouth wash, though, with all of those onions.

Sound a bit far-fetched? It's actually not such a bad idea healthwise. Onions are highly recommended for people trying to prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer and infections. Like most vegetables, sweet, yellow onions are fat- and cholesterol-free, and contain very little sodium.

The 4,000-Year-Old Healer:
For over 4,000 years onions have been used for medical purposes. Egyptians numbered over 8000 onion-alleviated ailments. The esteemed Greek physician Hippocrates prescribed onions as a diuretic, wound healer and pneumonia fighter. During World War II, Russian soldiers applied onions to battle wounds as an antiseptic. And throughout the ages there have been countless folk remedies that have ascribed their curative powers to onions, such as putting a sliced onion under your pillow to fight off insomnia.

The Modern Day Preventative:
Sweet onions are a member of the 500-plus allium family. While garlic, another allium, has been highly touted as a cancer preventative, most people consume far greater quantities of onions. As Americans search for low-fat, low-salt, but tasty meals, they're eating more onions - almost 18 pounds per person, which is 50% more than a decade ago.

You can cook them with other things and still get the same benefits. But over all onions are quite good for you....heres some website talking about everything they do for you and why.

Try buying purple (sweet) onions, they taste way better and don't make you cry as much as the white ones.

There are many different varieties of onion, red, yellow, white, and green, each with their own unique flavor, from very strong to mildly sweet. Onions can be eaten raw, cooked, fried, dried or roasted. They are commonly used to flavor dips, salads, soups, spreads, stir-fry and other dishes. Onions, and other Allium species, are highly valued herbs possessing culinary and medicinal value. Some of their beneficial properties are seen after long-term usage. Onion may be a useful herb for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, especially since they diminish the risk of blood clots. Onion also protects against stomach and other cancers, as well as protecting against certain infections. Onion can improve lung function, especially in asthmatics. The more pungent varieties of onion appear to possess the greatest concentration of health-promoting phytochemicals.
Consuming large quantities of onions can lead to stomach distress and gastrointestinal irritation that may result in nausea and diarrhea. There are no known interactions with drugs except that they can potentiate the action of coagulants.
